What ❌NOT❌ to use your Retinol with at the same time in the same skincare routine #dermatologist

👩🏾‍⚕️Let’s keep your skin barrier happy by using strong actives and retinoids in separate routines.

Think AM☀️ vs PM🌙skincare routine and ❌not in the same routine at the same time❌

👩🏾‍⚕️Knowing what to pair your retinoid with can be tricky. General rule of thumb especially when first starting out with any vitamin A derivative whether it be retinol, retinaldehyde, Tretinoin, adapalene etc is to start low and go slow.

It’s best not to use your retinol in the same routine with other strong actives like glycolic acid, salicylic acid, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide or occlusive ingredients like vaseline that could enhance penetration and cause irritation. Exception to this rule is if these ingredients are already formulated together in one product.

If there are other strong actives you want to use it’s best to use them in separate routines (one in ☀️ one at 🌙)Or alternative nights.

Retinoids pair great with moisturizers that strengthen the skin barrier and have skin nourishing and calming ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, squalane or peptides. Follow up post on what ingredients/products pair well with retinoids.

Have you made this mistake when pairing your retinoid?

  1. I currently use tretinion every other night. I really wanted to incorporate vitamin c into my skin care routine. How would I go about doing this?

  2. Wait, what!!! I thought tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide were okay to use in the same setting. Seems like im doing everything wrong…i just want clear skin 😩😩😩😩

    1. Not at the same time. So like wait an hour or use one in the morning and the other at night to reduce irritation. Benzoy peroxide works better with adapalene.

    1. From what I’ve gathered in watching dermatologists, Vaseline is okay if you want to protect your eyes and around your lips. However, putting it over Tretinoin creates too much of an occlusive environment, which drives the Tretinoin too much into the skin at once. That may lead to irritation.

  3. So I use the retinol resurfacing serum while also using vitamin c and the acne foaming cream… please let me know if I’m doing it wrong. I watched one of your videos that made me get it

  4. I went to the dermatologist for the first time and they instructed me to use the Glytone Cleanser and Arazlo in the same day. My eyes got so swollen

  5. Hey Dr Alexis! Do you think you can do a video on your thoughts on everyday bodywashes and body lotions that are commonly used? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the brands Irish Spring soap, Dove bodywash, Ivory, Dial and also body lotions like Vaseline, Suave, Jergens, Bath and body works etc. @dralexisstephens

  6. i’ve been using panoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) face wash after showering at night, waiting a few hours, and then applying differin adapalene gel right before bed……….. 😳

    1. I get what you saying when I use to go to a dermatologist they prescribed something similar like that and my face got horrible and dry and I have mild/. Moderate acne . But I guess every dermatologist is different.

  7. I use snail essence and then niacinamide before my retinol sandwich (moisturiser-retinol-retinol). The results are superb!

    1. When you say retinol sandwich, what does it mean? If you don’t mind elaborating. I’m currently using snail essence before my retinol but have seen minimal improvements just trying to see if I’m doing it wrong. Thanks 😊

    1. retinol should not be mixed with any exfoliating acid. exfoliate on another day when you’re not using retinol. and don’t exfoliate everyday that can lead to over exfoliation and damaged barrier

  8. Skinceuticals Vit C yes ma’am I use it every night just wait a few minutes in between. Skin is not irritated no burn at all.

  9. Very surprised. I was told by many derms that Vit C is very complementary to a retinol? What’s the issue with the combo? Second guessing everything lol

  10. I like to use the Cerave BPO cleanser at night, followed by cosrx snail mucin essence then tretinoin once the essence has dried. Topped with Cerave moisturiser. Am I causing havoc to my skin? Ps. We are ready for you to have your own skincare line😊 you can take all of my coins 😂

  11. I was prescribed a clindamycin phosphate/ benzoyl peroxide and a retinol by my dermatologist. She did not give me instructions on how to incorporate the two. I am a 18-year-old and I have been using them together almost every night for years now, how do you recommend I change my routine?
