Can Your Diet Make Your Skin Age Faster? A Dermatologist Explains

Can your diet actually make your skin age faster? Dermatologist Dr. Dray breaks down the connection between nutrition and skin aging, including whether sugar really damages collagen, how glycation and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) may contribute to skin aging, and whether you need to worry about the natural sugar found in fruit. Glycation and AGEs are an active area of research in skin aging, but the relationship is more complicated than simply saying that sugar "destroys collagen."

In this video, Dr. Dray explains what she would prioritize in a skin-supportive diet, including vegetables, whole fruit, legumes, whole grains, plant-based starches, protein, nuts, and seeds. She also discusses foods and dietary habits worth limiting, including processed meats, heavily charred foods, highly processed convenience foods, excessive sodium, and frequent snacking.

Dr. Dray also explains why she does not recommend fearing carbohydrates or eliminating fruit simply because it contains sugar, and why cooking more meals at home can make it easier to build a nourishing dietary pattern.

  3. Years ago I quick drinking totally because I heard it’s bad for skin. I don’t smoke at all for the same reason but sugar is a tough one. First of all I didn’t even know it’s bad for skin until a few years ago. To get off sugary treats I have to be on keto. It completely rids cravings!!

    1. I had to stop eating sugar because I had become pre-diabetic. I stopped abruptly and discovered that you can actually go through a withdrawal. It was not pleasant and I haven’t touched sugar since! Don’t want to ever go through that again!

  4. Chuando Tan the Singaporean phenom credits his youthful skin to rarely eating sugar. I think he said he’ll have a cookie once a month.

  5. Me eating a bag of chips while watching this… 😩 Looks like I need to trade my late night snacks for some blueberries and salmon. Thanks for the wake-up call, Dr. Dray!

  7. I got a cookbook of 5 ingredient meals and I went grocery shopping, already more veggies than I’m used to buying normally, plan to make 5 meals out of it. Wish me luck!

  8. Totally agree on trying a vegetable again that you previously disliked. It could have been how your parent prepared it when you were a kid. I thought i hated spinach because my mom would give us canned spinach with dinner sometimes 😂

  9. Great advice. How about a follow-up video talking about more of your favorite foods to easily prepare in the slow cooker and pressure cooker?

  10. started adding beans to each dinner early this week. crazy fiber content, like 75% of daily intake in 1-2 servings. it’s so hard to get the total amount of fiber, but with beans you can get there so fast
