Does Vaseline cause milia? Dermatologist Dr. Dray debunks this common skincare myth and explains what can actually contribute to milia, including sun damage, steroids, skin injury, and certain autoimmune skin diseases.
Milia are tiny, white, keratin-filled cysts that commonly appear on the face, especially around the eyes. While Vaseline is often blamed for causing milia, the reality is more nuanced.
In this YouTube Short, Dr. Dray explains what really causes milia and why using petroleum jelly does not automatically mean you will develop them.
Have you ever wondered if your skincare products were causing milia? Let us know in the comments!

i love your humor😂😂
I have had milia for years . I avoid heavy creams . I use bha / aha toners or my tret to help erase . I learned what I know from Dr D and I have appreciated oh so much ❤
I love when Dr. Dray gets spicy😂
Yes!!!! Tell them Dr Dray!!!
@Debbie-Savingsit could be something else, she dismissed this too soon with her attitude, CHALAZION can form around eyes and looks like milia.
@deniseatthelakeI have no idea. 🤔I’m still trying to figure out how to keep my skin looking good with the most affordable but good products that really work.
Doc I love your content! You keep it real! 🤍
Love you Big Time🩷🌷🩷🌷
Please don’t make Dr Dray repeat this again!!
Beef tallow caused this for me I never had it before…
😓i feel like i just got detention
Who dared to sleep in dr Drays class?
Raise your hands or sunscreen and get ouuuuut 🛑
Its evening time and I have Vaseline under both eyes right now and been doing so for two years now, its fine people
Not fine for everyone.. I can’t even use it on my lips without breaking out around the mouth
Love petroleum jelly for my skin!
Proud of you Dr. Dray!!!
Aha and bha Korean skincare + retinol routine was the only way I got them to go away, one will still pop up on my eye lid every once in a while, and I religiously wash my face at the end of the day. But it’s soooo much better than it used to be. ❤
Dr Dray, thank you so much for recommending I use Lectic Acid 10 percent on my milia. It is definitely getting rid of it. You’ve made an 80 year young woman a happy one.
Thanks for the help. I am going to try that
@leeck5491try it in one area first. I didn’t have any problems with it. Been using it for 2 weeks and I’m very happy with the results.
She hilarious 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
If i take too much collagen, i get them.
thanks dr dray, whenever i tell people i use vaseline on my face they try to say it will clog my pores or cause acne or millia but its the one product that has made my skin feel healthy
I used some really thick eye cream, maybe twice in my life, and after a week or so I had a few fatty looking white places but they were not anything like milia. I stopped the cream and they were gone in two days. They were not milia but I always wondered what they were, so maybe that’s what these people are experiencing?
I love your channel and I think you are the best dermatologist!! 💕❤️
My derm says that occlusive stuff can contribute to milia for some people, even though it does not cause it by its own (it’s not comedogenic). I got milia during 5 periods in my life, all when I tried ointment or vaselin around eyes.
My derm says millia is not caused by Vaseline. In fact are three years in using it every night on my face after moisturiser and no millia.
Dr Dray ❤
@silvia.m1622everyone’s skin is different, and it could be something else!
I am glad that you shared this. I have had milia that have cleared up when I stopped using certain products.
“She’s so mean!” 😂🤣😂 No she’s factual and blunt and we love it. 😂😂
Its not meanness, its arrogance. I had something called Chalazion around the eyes that looked like milia and can be caused by vaseline and oils blocking the meiobian glands in the eyes waterline. She shouldn’t be so dismissive.
@den@deniseatthelake a fair point that there can always be exceptions to the rule. But in her defence, your condition only looked like Milia.
I was getting them under my eyes and I didn’t realize they disappeared…..they disappeared when I got serious with my skincare under eyes.
