Sometimes skincare ingredients just do not work on your skin, and that’s OKAY! For me, it’s tretinoin. And after over a decade of trying to make it work, I QUIT. So I’m going to tell you why, and what retinoids (retinol, retinaldehyde, etc.) I’m using instead.

As a former esthetician I made the same decision a few years ago. Tret prevented me from being able to do regular chemical peels and other treatments and I hated that. Plus I was so tired of trying to WORK IT in my skincare routine. I’m done.
May I ask why you left esthetics? I’m considering going back to school to get my license. I’d be interested to hear your experience.
@nancy leon I unfortunately had to leave it due to chronic health problems, however it’s a fantastic line of work with a lot of opportunities.
Girl, same. My skin is just so sensitive and reactive when I use it – even with how much smaller is makes my pores, I just can’t make it work without constantly living in fear a product might look at me in the wrong way and cause a load of irritation
Susan, it sounds like your tretinoin situation is the one I’m in, but with Korean skincare. Believe me, I *so want* to be able to use their gorgeous toners and sunscreens, but everything I’ve ever tried has either given me blackheads or sore and inflamed acne. Also, fermented ingredients make my skin burn and peel horribly. However, my skin adores tretinoin! I’ve recently gone up to 0.05% so I’m going slowly, but so far it’s been good.
I have really sensitive skin, too, and I’ve found the powder enzyme cleansers work like magic to remove blackheads when my skins freaks out – like immediately. So gentle but so effective!
@Beauty Enthusiast oooohh, that’s good to know! Thank you! I have found that Korean cleansers are OK for me to use. The Purito defence barrier is nice, as is the cica one from B.LAB
Have you tried retin-a micro? It’s literally the best thing since sliced bread. I can use it almost everyday with less side effects. The time-release formula makes it so much easier to tolderate
Same – my sensitive skin does very well with Micro!
Same!!
This is my Vitamin C. My skin break outs so badly when I use anything with topical Vitamin C in it! It’s horrible for me. Skinceuticals, Melanie Simon, Sunday Riley, Naturium…. you name it. It just doesn’t work for me.
You probably have sensitive skin, I have the problem with vitamin C. Is not good for sensitive skin.
I also have issues with vitamin c bc of sensitive skin. I don’t know your budget but I love the Venn Skincare All-in-One. It has vitamin k which works as good as vitamin c but w/o side effects. I saw another product with vitamin k in it recently but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was but I bet we will see more formulas incorporate it since there are lots of us sensitive skin folks out there. PS this is the same cream Lisa Eldridge has been using to prep skin in her videos.
This was me as well, couldn’t use any Vit C. Finally tried the Paula’s Choice and it’s been GREAT. No breakouts at all!
I’m glad that more retinaldehyde options are entering the marketplace. As a rosacea sufferer, tretinoin is far too irritating for me
Hi, Susan, have you tried Altreno?
my first thought too, altreno doesn’t even have side effects on my skin while retinol/tretinoin in gel/cream does !
Retinaldehyde was been amazing for me. I’ve used Tretinoin before and it ruined my skin
“I’m a solid 0.5% retinol girl” would be a very funny t-shirt!
The Paula’s Choice 1% retinol treatment has been my go-to! Love it and highly recommended.
I’ve been using Curology for the past couple of years. Everyone seems to think that in order to be doing it “right” you have to get up to the highest dose but every time I tried to step up, my skin would freak out. But at the intro dose, I saw great benefits and I could use it every single day. I learned that slow and steady wins the race and I don’t have to deal with peeling. I’ve thought about stepping back down to retinal (esp after Curology raised their price last month) but I realized the sophisticated formulas that I love are the same as – or more expensive than – what I am doing now. Anyway, all this to say, I totally agree! Do what works best for your skin.
Brianna stanko has old videos and newer ones about retinaldehyde and how it’s just as effective if not better and gentler for the skin .
Ugh this is me. I finally just broke it off. I hate it because it kept my pores clear and my acne at bay but my skin looked so dehydrated and NEVER stopped peeling. I feel like my wrinkles look worse with how dry my skin stays. Even with sandwiching my moisturizer and not using it everyday, etc.
I have sensitivity and breakout issues with HA, so I won’t be trying a prescription strength retinol anytime soon! My skin is fussy AF.
Thank you so much for this video! I personally I’m staying with retinaldehyde and then focusing on hydrating and soothing ingredients…and of course a great sunscreen.
Thanks for sharing Susan. I had to stop using tret after 6 months of use due to it bleaching my skin. As a black woman, the random light spots really worried me. I find tret to be extremely abrasive and not meant for the skin on my face.
I am so relieved to hear this! I have been fighting with my Tretinoin for three years. I can only use it in very specific parts of my face. The other parts just get so dry and flaky, and then those parts are missing out on any retinol benefit. I’m definitely going to switch to a lower dose over the counter retinol! Thank you for sharing! ❤

Never say never. There is a new type of tretinoin coming out that is better than the traditional prescription tretinoin. It is super gentle, UV stable, and even more effective than the current type!
I don’t know what protected me when I used tretinoin but the skin gods definitely did lol. When I came back to NY at 18 I had been dealing with bad acne for a good year due to a medication I was taking, prednisone. In DR I never went to a dermatologist to get it treated so when I came back to NY I went to a dermatologist and she gave me Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide wash. She didn’t tell me how to use it so I was using the wash twice a day, and the retin-a every single night from day one, AND NO MOISTURIZER!!! I didn’t get any skin irritation at all. And it cleared my skin in a matter of weeks. Now that I see how it’s suppose to be used I think to myself damn I’m lucky I didn’t get irritation that time. Now what i regret is that I didn’t continue using it, because I don’t think my skin can tolerate it now.
