  1. Thank you so much for this video, Dr Dray! I started experiencing hand eczema a few years ago, it randomly flares up literally over night (especially during highly stressful periods) and then it takes forever to clear, it’s extremely frustrating. Thank you for bringing more clarity on this topic with your usual thorough and empathetic approach!

    1. One more thing…you might look into Histamine Intolerance and see if you possibly have it. Eczema was my first symptom, but it took years of building symptoms to figure it out. Not many doctors know about it. So if I see someone who might have it I mention it so they don’t have to suffer like I did.

    1. Mine is to. It always does when the weather starts to get cold. But also I have to wash my hands alot at work, so it is bad.

    2. @Aimee Burch Me as well, i work with kids so i’m constantly washing my hands. Plus the changing weather effects me too!

  2. thank you so much! I’m 18 and have been struggling with eczema only on my hands for the past year. I really appreciate the info and I think i realized with this video why I have it. Have a wonderful day and a Happy Thursday!ā¤

    1. Soft cotten gloves with an non ellergic cream helped me a lot. Even collected 50’s gloves to wear when working.

    2. @natasja van limburg stirum I used this technique too, but my cream was my daughter’s Weleda Calendula Baby Diaper Cream. It healed me up very quickly. Took me some time to figure out which soaps, lotions, and hand sanitizers worked for me.

    3. @Maggie true cause calendula makes me itchy! I like cerave at the moment. Yeah try different creams.

  3. OMG thank you! I’ve had these terrible eczema patches in between my fingers on my right hand for 6 months now. Glycerin, emollient moisturizers, NOTHING’S been helping. Thanks for the advice Dr. Dray!

    1. Vanicream moisturizing cream might help. my nephew swears by this for his eczema. He was able to stop seeing his derm for this issue.

    2. I had to get a steroid cream for my dishydrotic eczema during 2020, wearing gloves and washing hands so much made it awful…

  4. I once lost the fingerprints on some of my fingers from eczema because I was touching nickel all day when working in a physics lab in college and I didn’t know that nickel is a common irritant for people with eczema. Gotta say that now I’m way more careful about the things I touch.

    1. I had the same thing happen to me – no fingerprints for years. Then inexplicably it disappeared. Now years later I have it in my ear canal and it doesn’t matter what products I use. That’s also a whole lot of no fun! I do have a nickel allergy and I think it started because my wedding ring probably had nickel as part of the white gold alloy. But I’ve no clue why it’s in my ears now.

  5. Perfect timing Dr Dray! My hand eczema seems to always flare now and again (although eczema on other parts of my body is pretty well controlled)

  6. Having OCD and needing to wash hands very very often is also an issue for people. It is something I struggle with for periods of my life because of OCD. Covid really had my hands a mess for the first six months from washing constantly. I wish I would’ve known about you back then. Thanks for all your wonderful advice all the time. You’re so easy to trust, because you’re so straightforward about everything. I’m catching up on all your old videos though, I watch several a day now, and I’m learning so much from you. I love it!

  7. I had very bad eczema on my hands as a kid. Went to high school and it went away. I went back to visit my old school once, used the bright pink hand soap and my hands immediately starting itching. So I guess that was the problem the whole time. It also helped me to wear real gold and silver jewelry. Eczema is expensive!

  8. I have OCD and carry out frequent hand washing and this is what triggers my hand eczema. And right now I’m dealing with a ringworm infection on my hands – when you mentioned that I was like ā€˜this video is made for me šŸ˜…ā€™

  9. Thank you, Dr. Dray. Your advice & instructions on hand & foot care 100% helpful. I’m now in the habit of washing & drying my hands, applying a balm, thin cotton gloves & nitrile gloves before I do dishes, housework or gardening. I also like to use balm & wear cotton gloves & socks in eve if I’m watching tv or a movie. It feels pampering & the results are so worth it! My hands were always sore, chapped & scratched up with cracked cuticles, but now my hands & feet feel soft & wonderful and look 10 years younger. I gave your advice to my younger son who had terrible hand dermatitis when he was a chef, due to latex allergy plus living with several roommates in a place that had an outdoor hot tub that was not properly maintained. Ugh. His poor hands looked like crab claws – swollen, itchy, red, rashy & very painful. Thank goodness he listened to me & I listen to you! Hugs šŸ˜

  10. Thank you for this, and for persistently mentioning Nickel. Honestly, being diagnosed with dishydrotic hand eczema should not be a thing. Following up, I had to fight to get a patch test. My doctors just said it’s something atopic. I was putting so much steroid cream on and it just got worse. I had to insist on the allergy test. Turns out I’m allergic to Nickel. Everyday things like handles, bag chains, furniture, coins, kitchen appliances are really big issue now, probably because it took so long to find the cause and my hands are severely sensitized. A flare will always look like the dishydrotic stuff. Besides wearing gloves, antihistamins, a low nickel diet (eating high nickel foods can worsen an existing eczema) and a nickel testing kit, to learn what’s safe to touch and what’s not, have been extremely helpful to speed up the healing process. It’s nearly gone now. But some people have this for decades, it’s not something anyone should have to deal with long-term, it makes me sad.

  11. This video is just what I’ve been needing! I’ve been struggling with ezema on my hand for a few months. I had to change out my hand soap. I tossed out my Tula face cleanser and went back to cetaphil and my hand definitely got better along with drying it off and putting a non sented lotion on my hands.

  12. Wow! All me! I’m 43 & this started 10yrs ago (like I said in one of your previous videos about skin conditions). It started under my armpits (looked like third degree burns) from a deodorant that changed it’s formula & not long after I started getting it on my hands… I’ve worked with children for a long time (constantly washing hands/cleaning/gloves etc), I was a cleaner for years (chemicals/gloves/constant hand washing) & I’ve worked in kitchens over the years (constant hand washing/gloves/cleaning)… Now if I have to wear gloves to clean etc I wear cotton gloves first then non powdered gloves on top & if I’m gardening on top of both of those gloves I have gardening gloves as well so I sweat heaps which means I’m making matters worse again 😭 What can I put on my hands before applying the gloves if there’s anything??

    1. I had the same reaction to deodorant and baby diaper cream cleared it up. I then switched to Lume deodorant and haven’t had a reaction. But I’m also following a Histamine Intolerance protocal which includes a careful diet, and care with everything I consume as well as low anxiety. You might look into it and see if you have other symptoms.

Here’s what I’ve found to help my hands…

My hand eczema is gone now that I switched to Dr Bronners Unscented Baby soap bars in the bathrooms, and California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash for the shower (it’s a soap you can use for both). Kitchen dish soap is Biokleen Free & Clear liquid dish soap for hand washing dishes, and a Dr Bronners Unscented Baby soap bar. Dr Bronners comes in a liquid form as well but I find the bar easier to control how much soap goes on so it’s easier to rinse off.

To get my hands healed up I successfully used my baby’s Weleda Baby Calendula Diaper Cream coated all over my hands and then white cotton gloves (you can find at pharmacies or at Amazon) to cover while I slept. This last one healed it up so quickly! If you can, do this diaper cream treatment during the day when you have a block of hours because it’ll heal you quicker. But it’s sticky so wipe off most of it with a paper towel and then wash so you’re not over washing. I found the Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream to be somewhat effective in healing too but see it more as a good moisturizer. I still use the Aveeno every night on healed hands. But I don’t think I could have healed without the diaper cream.

Keep in mind that not all sensitive or ā€œfree & clearā€ soaps will necessarily work. I tried the Seventh Generation one and it made things worse.

Also, I found using soap in a public bathroom always set my skin off so I carried my own soap. And the hand sanitizers you find everywhere nowadays…I used EO Unscented hand sanitizer and carried my own everywhere, but now I can tolerate Purell brand sanitizer. Good luck!šŸ™‚

  13. Honestly this video was SO HELPFUL. I have bad OCD with hand washing. I’m constantly washing them with strong hand soap. I’m also a student vet nurse which doesn’t help with the hand washing. I have had pompholyx for YEARS. I’ve never known what it was or how to describe it but I can finally put a name to it. I felt like a bit of a freak because I had never known it was an actual condition . I’ve never met anyone with it. Thank you so much. I’ve never known how to describe the condition and now I know. This was extremely helpful

  14. HI Dr Dray! Thank you so much for making this video. I suffer from hand eczema to due working in a health care profession. This information was very helpful and so informative! Thank you!

  15. As someone who works with animals all day, my hands take a beating. Between all the hand washing, exposure to harsh treatments and wearing gloves when assisting in surgery and now the colder and drier air, my hands are dry, flakey and itchy no matter how much lotion I use. Thanks for the tips! Happy Thursday, Dr Dray!! I hope you have a tranquil evening. šŸ’•

  16. This was timely! I developed some eczema on my right thumb. I believe it’s an allergic reaction to pet urine enzyme cleaner. It’s highly fragranced. Thanks for the video!

  17. Thank you for mentioning floristry! I am a florist and suffer regularly with flare ups. it’s a viscious cycle of healing and flaring up again. it is very difficult to control. I have precription topicals and constantly treat my hands with over the counter products as well. Thank you for your informative videos!

  18. Thank you so much for posting this video. I’ve dealt with hand eczema so long. Probably at least 50 years. I’ve gone to so many dermatologists over that time period and just thought it was something I’d deal with for the rest of my life. But honestly this is the best information I’ve heard and it was explained in a way that I totally get why this might be happening and what I need to do to make it possibly go away. I can’t wait to try it. I actually have hope! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ā¤. BTW, I have noticed jewelry is an irritant and just kept wearing it because I thought if it was real gold it wouldn’t be the cause but now I understand about things getting under the band. No more rings for me! HA!

    1. Gold jewelry is not 24k gold because it is too soft and not durable. Gold jewelry is fortified with nickel to strengthen it. Also double check that you don’t have a nickel allergy. I say this because I have been there and done that.

  19. I have always had sensitive skin and eczema. I battled hand eczema for over and year and was doing all of these things!! Such good awareness! Thank you Dr. Dray!
