Dear Dr. Dray, please make a video about skin-picking too. I am addicted to picking my lips until they bleed. 😢 I’m about to be 30 and I just can’t seem to get rid of this habit. 😢
i have a video on this https://youtu.be/LiawZbgo6v4
Happy Tuesday! Although I don’ t bit my nails, they have never looked that great after having Covid more than one year ago. I use to have nice looking nails but maybe the change is related to aging.
Happy Tuesday!
Greetings Theresa Berg hope u r well n Happy Tuesday😀👍💜….
I am an identical mirror twin and fortunately, neither of us chewed on our nails, but she was a thumb sucker as a child. I’m glad I didn’t do that either. What was different with us though is that she had strong and beautiful nails, and I had the flimsy and break easy nails. Happy Tuesday everyone!
Nail biting has literally destroyed my teeth. Picking has left me with 25yrs of acne and scars. Biting inside of my cheeks has led to terrible sores and jaw damage. Sucking my thumb as a young child caused the need for braces which led to TMJ. What I would give to never do either of these ever again. I sit on my hands a lot to avoid doing these terrible things. Cut these habits now! I promise fighting the urge will save you more money than I can even imagine. My dentist and dermatologist drive Jags because of people like me. Here I am driving a Kia lol
Oh man that brings me back. Ohh these dreadful days of the past when i used to bite my nails. I remember starting it at elementary school and high school during periods of lots of stress and homework. I remember that i was cutting my nails short i order to stop bitting them. Thank god it resolved by itself and by that i mean i managed to cut that horrible horrible habit by using a stress ball or simply occupying my hands with chores 😊❤. Now that you mentioned it i cut by left toe nail wrong idk why but it resulted in paronychia and I’m recovering right now and i have to say it is really painful 😅. But I’m doing mu treatment consistently and the inflammation has been reduced greatly. That video really got me Doctor Andrea it really did. Thanks for all your given info they are so important ❤.
Thank you Dr. This has been enlightening-made me think about things in a new way if that makes sense. I’ve bitten my nails off and on my whole life-more on than off. I went from sucking my thumb as a young child to biting my nails. My parents tried everything. I got yelled at, threatened with various punishments like spanking and being confined in my room for several weeks and shamed for both the thumb sucking and nail biting. I don’t do it much any more finally and thankfully. My dad died 10 years ago and my mother and I don’t speak. Life is more calm now. Getting acrylic nails helped a lot-showed me how good my hands could look and I couldn’t chew the plastic. 😅 The bad tasting nail polish has been around forever and they didn’t help. My parents were difficult to deal with so it probably was /is anxiety. Wow. I never thought about it from that perspective before. Now that I think about it, I have had other compulsive habits like cracking my knuckles and twisting my hair. For the record I don’t have warts around my mouth (yikes) or anywhere else and I don’t pick at my skin, thank goodness. Have a great day! ❤
I’ve been a nail biter all my life, so thank you, Dr Dray, for this. It’s left my nails paper thin and very weak.
I have Onychotillomania and have had it for 20 years. I did DBT and went a year without ripping them off then relapsed again last year. They’re still growing back 😔
Thanks so much for putting this issue out there, Doc! 🙌🏼
I have never been a nail biter, but have always been a cuticle PICKER, which is just as bad. I found out just how bad it could get, this past summer, when I was diagnosed with chronic paronychia. It was very painful and my nail is still recovering from it.
Oh my I bit my nails my whole life. I unfortunately can’t bit them anymore due to dental work. (thank goodness) Now I trim and file them. I like them short. Anxiety #1 trigger for me. Thank you Dr. Dray
I have OCD and skin picking but the trigger for biting my nails is almost entirely based on their brittleness. The only success I’ve had is managing the length and attempting to strengthen them. The feeling of my nails catching will drive me nuts to the point of making my fingers bleed.
Thank you Dr. dray,
Would it be possible for you to create a dedicated video about onychopapilloma? I’ve been looked at by both my primary and derm but both didn’t give much information on it.
I saw another commenter on this video mention they had it as well and am wondering if this is a common phenomenon for past nail biters or of this is something hereditary.
Take care!
I’ve never been a nail biter but I did bite my cuticles when I was little. I know this video will be helpful to many. I personally know several nail biters so I think it must be a pretty common issue. Happy Tuesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a peaceful evening. ❤

I got you message! Jackie, it’s so very sweet of you to worry about me. I will take it slow in the morning. I want you to be safe too. I hope you don’t have to go out. Lots of unstable weather for much of the country. I pray that everyone will be safe. God bless you always for being such a dear friend. 💗
I have been biting my nails for 50 to 60 years and I’m 70 now. The only thing that ever worked for me was getting my nails done professionally with dipping powder. It makes them so hard that you are unable to bite them. I haven’t bit them for 10 years now. 🎉
Getting embarrassed in university with nail biting, I decided to get gel nails as natural as possible, making it impossible to bite. Following the “2 weeks to break a habit” logic, it did indeed work. Cost a bit to get it done, and it added some chunk to fingertips.
Normalize men getting nails done. Especially when it will eventually help unhealthy habits.
I always appreciate how informative and educational your videos are. I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and this is the video of yours that is most pertinent to me. I’m 27 years old and I’ve been biting my nails literally for as long as I can remember. I bite my fingernails regularly, and only recently stopped biting my toenails. I’ve tried a lot of common methods that haven’t worked, like bad tasting nail polish (I bite them anyway). For some reason, any length of nail really bothers me. Clipping my nails short helped me stop biting my toenails, and even wearing a mask at work can stop me from biting my fingernails absent-mindedly. I’ve also found that using Vaseline on my nails has been wonderful for healing in the nail area, which makes it more likely for me to leave them alone. Hopefully one day I’ll stop biting those fingernails!
You bit your toenails? That is on another level. 💀
I always appreciate when you mention mental health in relation to a variety of dermatological issues, from self-esteem to body-focused repetitive behaviors to how people can support loved ones. Thank you!
Dr. Dray, you brought back a memory for me. I was a freckled face redhead 11 year old nail biter. My cousins would visit every couple of weeks and they had the prettiest pink nails and they always chewed double mint gum. 😅 One day, I just said to myself I’m never biting my nails again, and I didn’t.
Is there anything you can recommend to help with cheek biting? The aversion therapy you talk about is something I can see being helpful for me but it’s harder on the inside of your mouth as you can’t cover it :(
