Yes I get cankersores every few months it seems. For me, they tend to flare when I’m extra stressed, haven’t been sleeping well, or get dehydrated. Such an informative video. I didn’t know about toothpaste ingredients. Cankersores can really be debilitating when you have to speak a lot at work and it’s painful
My own got better after taking multivitamins!
Thanks for mentioning Sjogren’s, Dr Dray. There are so many annoying and painful issues associated with it. Diagnosed 30 years ago – ugh!
I have braces now and this video couldn’t have come at a better time! Canker sores have been bothering me over the past few weeks and I’m really looking forward to getting the braces off so I don’t have to deal with the sores as much.
This is great information, thank you. I’ve had canker sores since I was a teenager and they can really affect your life depending on the location. Stress, trauma to the mouth, and medicine appears to cause issues. Ones against the teeth are particularly bad.
I would get these sores around my throat/ear area in my mouth and I would develop a fever from them! So far I have had it that intense twice in one year and I don’t know what was causing it but I did switch to SLS free toothpaste for a short while. But now that I’m eating well and taking vitamins when I feel I need it, it hasn’t occurred for a while but I’m curious as to why they suddenly appeared and got sooo intense!
Since choosing an SLS free toothpaste a couple of years ago the canker sores have not returned. I was under a lot of stress at the time. I only had them once, but it was horrible. I still get dry mouth from the one medication I take, even though I
keep as hydrated as possible.
Dry mouth increases the chance of cavity formation, so it’s so important to still use a toothpaste with fluoride! Dry mouth can cause bad breath too and no-one wants that! I use Listerine mouthwash tabs, (they look like square flat pieces of plastic); they encourage saliva production and also prevent bad breath. I also use Oral7 hydrating mouth gel, with active enzymes that refresh and soothe the gums & mouth. It’s sugar & saccharine free. I have tubes of it everywhere at home, work, car, handbag etc. It’s very handy to use when you are out at dinner and can’t brush your teeth immediately. I also use dental floss everyday. I also like to be nice to kiss!
I hope this helps someone.

Hi nada b. I remember wearing braces and feeling that scraping sensation against my mouth. Eventually I got used to it and I don’t remember having issues with sores or anything. Though my dentist did recommend a product called Peroxyl mouth rinse that contains hydrogen peroxide (since they said regular hydrogen peroxide as a rinse wasn’t a good idea). Hope you’re doing well.
Having suffered from them chronically my whole life, I was shocked (happily) that in my case, gluten-free was 99.999% a total “cure”.
Side note: several studies show that horses often get a similar “mouth lesion” from the mechanical irritation of a bit in their mouth, and also if they have sharp points on their teeth. I stopped using bits with horses more than a decade ago once I saw these studies, and when people ask… I remind them of how painful canker sores are, and why I will never again subject a horse to that possibility. If someone mine has never had one (lucky person!) maybe they cannot understand how bad they can feel.
I’m 51 and never had canker sores until I got Invisalign. I’m almost done, and it was particularly bad when I had elastics. I have permanent scarring on my inner cheeks, and I’m hoping I don’t get scarring on my tongue. 32 days to go!
Was suffering my entire life from chronic canker sores, went gluten free, and I haven’t had another canker sore in 6 years. And my eczema is completely gone too!
Celiac disease? I have a gluten intolerance but going gluten free wasn’t the solution for me
I used to get these a lot as a child but rarely as an adult. I can still remember how painful they were and how long it took for them to go away. My mom used to have me use Campho-phenic (spelling?) that came in a glass bottle. I don’t remember it helping much. Happy Friday, Dr Dray! I hope you, your sweet momma and little Tybee have a fun and blessed weekend! 💜
🙏💕🐈🐈💤💕❤️🙏
My mom used to use the same thing on me. It tasted awful.
Thank you for this helpful, in depth tutorial. I learned so much. Your YouTube videos are always excellent.
This is an excellent topic Dr. Dray. I think I had a total of 3 in my lifetime. Don’t know what triggered it but I’m glad they’ve been gone for over 10 years. I use hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash daily.
I used to suffer with them! Some things that helped the most with the pain was taking tylenol. Another thing that helped was chewing up a rolaids and letting that help calm down the acid. But, the one thing that has helped the most is taking a daily potassium pill! I have not had cancer sores for years now!
I had been applying baking soda to my cancer sores as recommended by my dentist. It works!
I never would have guessed this was a dermatology subject! I had asked multiple dentists for ideas back before I discovered a solution and they never offered any suggestions beyond oragel numbing gel.
I started getting canker sores in my mid 20’s. I was getting them at least 1-2 times a month on a regular basis. For the last 30+ years I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of L-Lysine daily and no longer have any problems with canker sores.
Since I was little, I’ve been pouring pure salt on my canker sores. It BURNS like you wouldn’t believe, but once the pain stops, I wash the salt away and the sore seems to heal within 24 hours. This isn’t for everyone as I’ve passed out from the shooting pain/burn a couple of times. But the 24-hour heal time makes it worth it 😅
Dr. Dray, you always come in clutch! I literally just got a canker sore and was wanting to know more information. Your videos always come at the right time!
0:17: 🩺 Canker sores, or apus ulcers, are painful ulcers that can occur inside the mouth or genitalia and can be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
3:52: 💆 Managing stress is important, but eliminating it completely is not necessary.
7:39: 🔑 B12 and folic acid are essential for the formation of healthy blood cells, and their deficiency can lead to immune system issues.
11:29: 🦷 Certain ingredients in toothpaste can be irritating and trigger peroral dermatitis, so it’s important to be mindful of intense flavors and foaming agents.
15:10: 😷 Cold sores, also known as SAR, are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are different from canker sores.
Recap by Tammy AI
Thank you so much for this video. I have fought with canker sores – usually triggered by stress or injury- for over 40 years. My doctor prescribed Trimcinolone Acetonide Paste, 0.1%. I apply at night, and by morning the sore begins to heal and is usually gone in 24-48 hours. It’s a lot better than when the doctors used Silver Nitrate sticks to burn them out. I think this subject is very under discussed and misunderstood. Well done.
