Treating Hyperpigmentation | How to Fade Dark Spots

Hyperpigmentation is something I struggle with. I’ve used prescription skincare to deal with it, but it will come back. I feel like currently, I don’t need to use prescription treatment or more invasive procedures to keep the pigment at bay, there are treatments and ingredients that are accessible that can really help. I am sharing with you those ingredients I look for in products to treat these discolorations and the concentrations I believe that are needed to make a difference! Whenever you are interested in a product that claims to be for hyper pigmentation, dark spots, brightening, make sure to see which key ingredients are included.

  1. Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for delivering such wonderful and informative videos, Renée! I have since unsubscribed to a HUGE amount of youtubers ever since I started watching your videos, and become a lot more aware of what ingredients are good/bad for my skin, and how to treat my skin issues / treat my skin overall :D

    1. Aw thank you so much for sharing this. I’m so happy you can make better choices that are helping transform your skin!

  2. Thanks so much for another super informative and well presented video, Renée!! I have freckles which I’m not unhappy with, but have a couple patchy sun spots etc. that I’ve been trying to work on. Glad to know I”m using the right ingredients and on the right track, and some of the products I’m using are even specifically mentioned! ♡ I do wonder though, scientifically, why do freckles not respond in the same way as other types of (brown) pigmentation? Curious minds want to know!

    1. Freckles are the sign of sun damage, usually done when you were very little. That’s why they need more patience than newer hyperpigmentations you might develop later on in life

  3. Hi Renee! always love your channels and those helpful videos! 💗
I do have a question: a lot of primers and foundations are usually labeled with sunscreen functions like spf30/20, is it enough for avoiding dark spot or do I have to use sunscreen separately?

  4. Thank you so much for the video, Renee! I feel like yt really needs these informative videos and concrete ingredients on how to fight and prevent our skin problems.
Please talk about rosacea sometime too! Lysm xxxxx

  5. Wonderfully informative video, as always :)
Thank you for everything you do for all us skincare junkies out there!

  6. Hi Rene! YAAASSSSS! Thank you so much for doing this video! Besides wrinkles, this is my other big skincare concern. Luckily for me, my skin is pretty normal: not dry or too oily, no acne. The only thing my skin was ever sensitive to was retinoid but hopefully your ordinary recommendations will work. I’ve already been using Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drops and Wishtrend Pure Vitamin C advanced serum for months. But I think I’ve hit a plateau. So I’m hoping my ordinary purchases (Alpha Arbutan and the Advanced Retinoid) will work. Thanks again. Your skin = #skingoals

  7. this is such a helpful video! I’ve been looking online and YouTube for explanations that break down different ways of treating different types of hyperpigmentation but you were able to simplify it and make it informative and easy to understand! I’ve been getting dark spots all over my body from bug bites that turn medium/tan after the redness goes away. I’ll be sure to try your recommendations since I really trust your videos!

  8. I must say, you’re the only YouTuber I trust for recommendations because all your knowledge and information is 100% correct!

  9. Being of asian origins and having lived in Europe all my life I find that your videos are a breath of fresh air. You are helping me acknowledge what my skin really needs for the very first time, and thanks to that I’m able to correctly treat it. Thank you oh so much

  10. Lovely video Renée. I have pretty bad PIH from cystic acne. I have been getting in office peels for years to control acne and fade the PIH. I use HQ (90 days on/off) acid toners/creams, tretinoin and vitamin C in a pretty strict regimen. I won’t ever be “clear” but I am so much better than ever. I found the phytic acid (melanin inhibitor) in Obagi really kick-started things for me. I am going to order the Niacinamide on your recommendation, and alternate it with my vitamin C/E/ferulic acid serum. Wish me luck!

  11. Hi- I’m a new subscriber and I am really enjoying binge-watching your videos! I am currently treating a few sun spots with hydroquinone, and I’m wondering when to apply it in my skincare routine. Currently I’m putting it on at night in this order: essence(SK-II), hyaluronic acid ( SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier) Lactic Acid serum (Sunday Riley Good Genes) then hydroquinone and then moisturizer. Does that sound correct? Also, where does it fit in a routine that includes using Retin-A? I only use it at night, but the prescription states it could be used am and pm. Thoughts? I’d really appreciate your feedback! Love from the Bay Area 🌈

  12. All your videos are amazing! I love that you’re not scared to explain the mechanism of action of the formulas and active ingredients that you recommend. As a chem engineer I really appreciate this :*

  13. Thank you so much for explaining the difference between post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and erythema! I always thought I had hyperpigmentation and tried to treat it that way! This was very helpful

  14. I like how you summarize everything in the end especially the important bits…ive been dealing with acne scars since i started working and cystic acne is one of my most biggest probs so this is actually very helpful and your other videos too

  15. Thank you for your channel! Your delivery of information is perfect. Condensed but easy to follow. I also appreciate your feedback on the Ordinary’s Alpha Arbutin. I have been using it as well as Vitamin C (+ Vitamin F) for the last month and haven’t noticed a difference. Thank you for advising it takes about 3 months <3

  16. You are amazing. I just got the Mirena iud a few months ago and got a sunburn on my upper lip a few months later. I think the combo kickstarted a melasma patch on my upper lip and it looks like an embarrassing mustache shadow. I will definitely be following your tips and appreciate the reminder to be consistent and patient. Thank you!

  17. Hey Renee, firstly thank you for your great videos, I love the way you cut through the marketing hype bullshit!. The beauty industry is so toxic- full of false claims, phony pseudo science and incredibly over priced.

I have a reactive skin, with contact dermatitis reactions to skincare and cosmetics so I’ve steered clear of skincare for the longest time. I just gave up on spending money so much money on products that did nothing or worse, covered me in a sandpaper rash. I recently treated myself to The Ordinary products which have been great for me but now with the Deciem drama I’m wondering “where to from here?” Would you consider doing a comprehensive dupe list for The Ordinary products ? I have starting looking at Hado Labo products including the arbutin lotion and premium goko gyun products but am getting confused with the way international stores label them “mentholatum” etc. Is that the same stuff?

  18. Hello Renee I love your content and this video came to me at the right time as I had TCA cross treatment a couple of months ago and now I have hyperpigmentation from it. Do you still recommend those products you listed to someone with my case? Thanks again Renee you’re a gem! 💕

  19. Oml this video is 3 years old I’m shook! Everything she’s talking about here is sooo relevant to affective skincare now and personally I never heard any of these tips 3 years ago, only in the present day so to have her get this video out then is a testament to how knowledgeable she is. SHE was literally ahead of the game in terms of skincare Oml
