I’m not sure if you’ve made a video about it yet but if not could you please clarify whether synthetic vitamin E supplements are dangerous and possibly cancer causing? Thank you :)
π ugghhh people!!! Looooove Jack!!! And you too!!! I can only imagine the work you put into your videos. And the research! Thank you for all you do! β€οΈ
However, complicated problems are often multifactorial. So just because for instance there is a correlation between smoking and heart disease we can’t say smoking causes heart disease because not only does correlation not equal causation but there are many potential causes of heart disease. If someone smokes, has a genetic risk for heart disease, and is obese it’s near impossible to narrow the exact cause of the incidence of the disease in that person.
@FrancescaB So if someone is a chain smoker and they develop heart disease, do we hush those who suggest causality with a flippant and condescending rote response? Or can we admit there are risk factors within our control that we can act on, to improve outcomes?
@FrancescaB Despite the fact that all pharmaceutical products carry documented risks, we know it’s only one category of products where this saying about correlation is relentlessly deployed. How does it advance our society and its goals to marginalize and ridicule those who suffer adverse events, rather than acknowledge their scientific legitimacy and offer the means of discovering whether or not suspicions are valid, case by case?
@PS If there is a correlation we can name something as a possible factor in a multifactorial problem but at no point is that enough to claim causation. Even if someone is only a chain smoker there could be an underlying or unknown genetic history or other factors. These problems are common in biology and something that makes curing or preventing disease so difficult.
Hi Dr Dray great to be here this evening as well as earlier today.

Correlation doesn’t disprove causation; temporal associations of cause and effect are valid.
