Vitamin F helps to decrease hyperpigmentation and is one of the most important ingredients when looking for a moisturizer. In this video, we will review the best moisturizers for hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
You want to use a moisturizer rich in Vitamin F aka Linoleic acid & Alpha-Linolenic Acid when you are trying to correct hyperpigmentation because Vitamin F has pigment reduction abilities, increases cell turn over rate, is anti-inflammatory, increases skin barrier health, and decreases transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
Moisturizer choice is super important because it can affect product penetration, efficacy, and side effects of the treatment product.
In the context of hyperpigmentation Fatty acids have effects on tyrosinase. Unsaturated fatty acids inhibit tyrosinase activity and can help fight hyperpigmentation.
Here are a few of my favorite moisturizers rich in Vit F:
Light Moisturizers:
Acure
Inkey List Hemp Moisturizer
Liquid Gold
First Aid Beauty UltraRepairAir
Honest Beauty
Medium Moisturizers:
EltaMD PM
Paula's choice omega complex moisturizer
Drunk Elephant's F Balm
Heavy Moisturizers:
Ceramedx
Naturium plant rich Ceramide
Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair
Oils:
Ghosts Democracy
The Ordinary Vit F
The easiest way to identify if a moisturizer is rich in Vitamin F is to look for formulas that specifically advertise omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid content, such as Paula’s Choice Omega+ Complex moisturizer, $35, Biossance Squalane + Omega repair cream, $58 or Drunk Elephants F-Balm- $52
Of note plant, nut, and seed oils with high unsaturated fatty acid concentrations work as well. Sunflower, safflower, evening primrose, rose-hip seed, and flaxseed oils all have particularly high concentrations of linoleic (omega-6) and linolenic (omega-3) acids.

I honestly watch so many skin care vids and don’t think I’ve seen anyone else talk about Vitamin F to this extent. Dr Alexis upping the skincare knowledge game!
@John Michael also the double repair from la roche posay is a good moisturizer not too heavy and don’t irritate. You can get this at Walgreens or wherever
She’s not an influencer. She’s a doctor. A dermatologist. That’s why.
@Dr Alexis Stephens Do you have cream for removing scar , please when you look at my skin can you recommend body lotion for me
Same. I am here for all the education! Seeing a dermatologist on 7/6 and will be ready with my Dr. Alexis notes! ;)
I’ve recently started using Paula’s Choice, and I would love to see a video about your recommendations from the brand. I absolutely love how knowledgeable and consistent you’ve been, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us ☺️
Great suggestion! and Thank you!
This video is so, so helpful! Thank you so much for putting this together. My husband needs some help with sunspots and I’ve been putting together a simple skin care routine (he’s already seeing some results–yay!) I’ve been wondering which moisturizer is best…I’m so excited to have some options!
Hi Dr. Alexis! Do the same rules apply to body lotions if you have hyperpigmentation? If so, can you make a video for recommended body lotions and body washes for those with hyperpigmentation (and sensitive, breakout-prone skin [such as bacne])?
Taking an evening primrose oil supplement orally has been life changing but it never occurred to me to use it directly on my skin as well! Thank you for your endless knowledge and honest product reviews <3
I used to take Evening Primrose for Menstrual cramps. It worked miracles in alleviating the pain. I also noticed that my fingernails grew rapidly and beautifully. Good stuff! I’ll have to try it externally as well!
It broke me out for some reason but rosehip oil is a godsend for me!
Dr. Alexis, if you released your own skincare line, just know many of us will be 100% for it! Thank you again for the info!
She does have a skin care line…call her office
Dr Alexis, hw I can treat white spot on my skin, and how to have a flawless skin dat can leave your skin spotless.
Omg she is in Florida?!?!
@Jeannie Enid Abdallah Yes
I wanted to let you guys know that the brand Alastin has a great moisturizer that has linoleic acid in it as well. I use to faithfully! It’s a smooth consistency and I’d consider it a medium hydrating moisturizer. It’s called “Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer with TriHex Technology “
why is this woman not at 1 Mil. subscribers? It’s a shame!! Shes amazing!
*goes back to see if I subscribed…I HADN’T…WHY NOT!?…
*shamefully subscribes (shouldabeendonedonethat)
Because people are busy watching DIY skin care gurus who are not licensed estheticians or dermatologists
@S E like hyram
just found her and wondering the same!!
I have sensitive combination skin, sometimes oily & sometimes dry. Currently on acne medication that drys out skin. Followed her instructions & got the eltamd & love it !!! It’s comes out like a gel but doesn’t leave your face with a greasy appearance.
7:50 light moisturizers
9:45 medium moisturizers
11:25 heavy moisturizers
Bless you
Bless you ❤️
Thanks you for everything.
Hi Dr. Alexis, Thank you for this video! You definitely delivered a lot of knowledge. Can you talk about gel/water-based moisturizers? Personally I have struggled with dehydrated skin and having oily/combo skin. (Especially as spring/summer approach and I get really oily!)
Dr. Alexis thanks for this information. I currently use skin items from Paulas choice and one of them is the omega serum that you mentioned. It is one of my favorite products as well. It makes me feel good to know that this product has your approval.
I am so excited that you provide options that are cruelty free! It’s so difficult finding good recommendations for skin of color that are also cruelty free! Thank you!
Awesome awesome awesome video!! I love she takes her time to actually review price points, other choices like the oils.. and being honest and transparent! Yes huntyyy!
I’m so happy I found you !! Your videos have been so helpful I’m in my 40’s and there’s so much I didn’t know thank you for educating me on skincare it’s never too late to learn ❤️
I am just starting as well
Have so much respect for board certified dermatologists! The amount of schooling and hours required to become board certified dermatologist AND she is a cosmetic chemist!., crazy smart and knowledgeable! Love her videos too!
Thank you sooo much for this video! Super helpful. And a huge thank you especially for being mindful to our audience that purchases only cruelty free and vegan products. I really appreciate it 🥰
I love how informative this video is. You get straight to the point but also add enough detail and information about the products to educate us. Thank you!
I have not understood the whole Vit F and hyperpigmentation battle so well, until now. Thank you so much. The way you explain things is so easy to understand. Can we use these on the rest of our bodies where there’s hyperpigmentation as well?
Hi, Dr. Alexis! I’ve been using the Cetaphil radiance collection for about 2 months now and I feel like it has helped with my acne dark spots. However, I do feel like it’s packing on more oil to my oily skin. since your video I decided to check out the ingredients but found that it has no list of ingredients. I would love to know what’s your take on the Cetaphil brand?
