It wasn’t! But all these politicians are defending reproductive health clinics such as Planned Parenthood so people aren’t getting affordable preventative care anymore. The rest of the health care systems can’t manage the influx of that many patients and also patients are too ashamed to go to places not Planned Parenthood where they treat patients without shame.
Practically no disease is truly irradicated. There is almost some very minute, geospecific place that harbors these often thought irradicated diseases.
The data is there, you just have to look for it.
Syphilis was never eradicated. It was managed by people going to planned Parenthood. Those are now closed in red states. Red states now seeing resurgence and at later stages and tragically hurting children.
@slgogo594 It’s true. There’s so much “information overload” in our culture nowadays, that people rarely seek out additional information on something that they don’t think is directly impacting them. I love biology, so I’m a nerd for this kind of information. . but I had no idea it was making a comeback.
Very cool of Dr Dray to make a video on a less than desirable topic- just to get the word out to us! Probably doesn’t benefit her channel, but she acknowledges that the information needs to be passed on, because she genuinely wants us to have the information we need in order to be healthy. Dr dray, thank you. A friend of mine was recently accidentally diagnosed in the er. Without the ER, he would not have been treated. Very dangerous and no one talks about it. Very important topic, thanks for educating the followers ❤❤❤

I have the impression a few years back HIV served as a driver to catalyse everybody’s attention around safer sex practices and testing. Unfortunately in recent times HIV is not a focus anymore in the public debate and other infections such as syphilis – which as u say is a bacterial infection and not a virus – tend to go unnoticed.
People are much less alarmed by HIV these days, and I don’t know why. I just heard someone say this past weekend… nowadays HIV+ just take a few pills per day and they live a good long life. 😮
The attitudes around HIV softened because of improved treatment, PeP, and PrEP. Not saying it’s right, mind you.
@@pamelarodriguez5674 yes there are multiple reasons in fact that span from the absence of campaigns (and related budget), sexual education in schools, under financing of health services (in the countries where welfare provides for your health needs such as in my country)… also the way some concepts have been mainstreamed. See post exposure prophylaxis for example: an infected person with undetectable viral load is not infective in terms of the hit virus but could still be a vehicle of any other bacterial infection. It is a natural relapse from the years of terror in the 80s and 90s but at the same time this natural relapse should be managed properly while people have largely been abandoned to themselves or to some opinionated YouTuber with no medical background. Especially in countries like the USA where the costs of testing and therapy are super high this is quite dangerous.
@@themiasmastream I believe it is right and desirable to finally dismantle the association between sex and disease in terms of principles.. it’s the way we are doing it that is a little sloppy: we are not going towards sexual education investing money in preventions, schooling, free healthcare for all but we are in fact regressing to pre HIV silence. Also the state invites people to test but at the same time, once you test and you happen to infect anyone, treats you like a serial killer on a killing spree while nobody ever questions the “victim” or the state itself that is ultimately – at least in most cases – the one that failed both parties not providing proper education and tools/free and equitable medical assistance etc etc. This is very contradictory and does not help in my opinion.

I’ve often wondered why Dermatologists in my area often declare sexual health as their secondary field of expertise. Now I know.
I’m a nurse practitioner and work at a wound care clinic. I got a hospital consult for someone with “cellulitis” but turned out he had a bad rash that was also on his palms and feet. I included syphilis as part of my workup and sure enough that’s what it was! He was there for a whole other reason and just happened to be “lucky” enough to have a rash while there.
I’m happy you’re talking about this. I’m a retired reproductive health nurse and syphilis is definitely on the rise in California. We treated average 15 clients per day for different stages of syphilis.

Holy crap, that’s absolutely frightening! I do wish people would stop carrying so much shame around STDs and STD testing, along with having easily accessible care.
Back in the day, early 80’s, we were required to get a syphilis test before we could get into cosmetology during high school. Imagine my horror of walking into the pediatrician’s office where I had gone since I was probably 5 or less, and requesting that test. I started by telling the cosmetology story, and they still gave me the side eye like I was lying 😂
I am appalled that a health professional put a moral judgment on a possible diagnosis. I hate to think of his patients that asked to get an HIV test.
These days, if a doctor behaves like this then report them to the AMA.

@squirrels2.0 Now cosmetology schools probably test for a bunch of things including hepatitis. And this is why public health clinics are good. Then you don’t have to deal with people you feel uncomfortable with. Narrowminded pediatrics staff.
@@qingdaogrrl Certain things deserve shame like sleeping around and knowingly giving others whatever STD has been contracted, but as for getting tested or requesting birth control, these things shouldn’t be shamed, but it’s understandable that someone who is young and going through these motions is going to get an eyebrow raise.
Back in the day, you used to have to take blood tests when getting your marriage license. You still see these in old movies.
I’m so happy to see you covering this! I have worked as a DIS (Disease Intervention Specialist) for many years in public health. Rates in women increased 217.4% from 2017-2021 (CDC). This has caused so many cases of congenital syphilis, miscarriages and stillbirths. I didn’t know dermatologists started out as “syphologists”! It makes sense, though, since both early stages involve a skin disorder and are signs and symptoms we look for! You are such a great educator Dr. Dray.
Many people with end stage disease without a diagnosis. tertiary syphilis is long term syphilis, as a Registered Nurse in Florida, seeing more and more in elderly and immigrants.

Besides letting our guards down as a society, I also wonder if the transition to rapid tests for HIV also contributed to decreased screening during routine STI screens (a lot of patients want to avoid blood tests and rationalize it as: “I’ll don’t if I am concerned”). People prefer the least invasive options, and HIV scared people enough to get a venipuncture.
My college roommate found out his partner had cheated when he got an anonymous call from the Dept of health informing him that he had been exposed to syphilis. In NM it’s still legally required to disclose your partners to the state when you’re diagnosed with syphilis.
It can also stay latent for a while. And symptoms can be overlooked. So, it’s not necessary for someone to pass it on by cheating.
A swinger couple I know was recently diagnosed, and have decided to end their swinger lifestyle as a result. Thank you for the education, Dr. Dray.

Great job Dr Dray. So many young people are unaware of this horrible disease. It’s so sad to see it on the rise again. Anyone can get this disease. Diseases don’t care about socio-economic groups, age, race, etc. etc. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I remember seeing a patient many years ago with tertiary syphilis who had been raped by her father who had the disease and transmitted it to her as a child. To see what that disease had done to that woman’s brain impacted me so much.
Thank you so much for all of your videos, but especially this one, as so many people are so cavalier about unprotected sex now. Now with such effective AIDS cocktails, there is far less awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex and the STI’s that can occur.
