The Problem with Natural Skincare | Dermatologist @Dr Dray debunks natural skin care claims. Are natural skin care products better? The problem with clean beauty and natural skin care is that it lacks transparency, misrepresents risks, and in many cases may expose the user to greater risk of contact dermatitis from the usage of botanic extracts. #skincare #naturalskincare #dermatologist

Since watching your videos i NEVER fall for the “natural” marketing! I focus on the ingredients and always find my self examining ingredients in the drugstore 😂. Happy tuesday!
Thanks for watching
Dr.Dray is the reason I can actually read ingredients on skincare products
I used to fall for this trend! Gave up a working (and actually somewhat “natural”) skincare routine in favor of EWG-friendly products that made my skin miserable! But I do have to admit, a lot of “clean” beauty products make for great aromatherapy experiences.
💙
It’s the essential oils
@ChesireSays🔮 no duh
I know the contact dermatitis very well unfortunately. 🙁 And it didn’t happen overnight. My sensitivity happened over time and started when I was fully wrapped up in the “clean beauty” hype. Everything I used was laced with essential oils, etc., many claiming to be “natural preservatives”. It’s all bogus BS. After going back to using simple, fragrance free drugstore products, my skin was restored, thankfully. 😊 Thank you for this video Dr. Dray. Very informative and helpful information. 👏
Same here. Burt’s bees and stuff with squalane wrecked my skin. Especially the tea tree oil product rashes.
Same!
Not all natural brands use essential oils/fragrance, just as not all commercial brands are fragrance-free or even offer fragrance-free options.
I live in Germany and I hate those Weleda things, all of them are loaded with essential oils and fragrances. Besides their toners smells just like hand disinfectants due to high percentage of simple alcohols which may dry your skin out and their sunscreen is almost unusable unless you want an oily ghost look. However many news media advertise this brand.
I sympathise 🙏 Same for me. Plain and simple skin care is so much better than all those perfumes and oils.. I was caught up in the clean beauty craze and my skin was terrible. Discovered Dr Dray and my skin has never been better. Grateful.
Does anyone remember when a Kardashian said our skin deserves minerals, not chemicals? 🤦♀️
No water I guess 😂
@Dr Dray No skin at all, I suppose 😅
I recall being so confused at that
I learned this quite some time ago. I thought it would be better if I used natural beauty products. But my skin gradually got worse and worse over time. I was getting itching and had breakouts. Finally gave up and went back to basic drugstore like Aveeno and cerave and then my skin would instantly clear up. It was all the lavender, orange, lemon, eucalyptus, tea tree on the “natural” products that were giving me a rash. Learned my lesson.
Exactly. Boring is better for my skin haha.
omg agree the citrus essential extracts as well tea tree oil have made my skin so angry in the past when ive encountered them in some products
I also had allergy reaction to citrus oil before. Lavender and mint were more or less fine as long as it’s in lower concetration, but whenever I find citrus oil in a product that is strong enough for me to smell it, it often gives me rashes and dry patches.
This is half trolling and half sharing. I adore peppermint oil. Besides some form of steroid creams, it has been the best for alleviating my itch, whether it be bug bites or eczema flares.
Same here. I noticed more spots and pigmentations when I was using natural clean products. The only thing that really made my skin itchy is fragrance. So now I’m going back to Clinique and Olay. Those are the only 2 that really gives my skin true balance and healthy skin
Thank you for setting the record straight. On a side note, your debunking videos absolutely exude your passion for correcting false information.
Can we just pause and applaude Dr. Dray for this. This is what actual knowledge sounds like 👏
👏👏👏
I also feel sorry for her. I bet she encounters a lot of frustrating situations with clean and natural beauty stuff.
Happy Tuesday! Loved the video as always. The ability of companies to use such misleading labels and claims is awful.
for at least three years I was ONLY using olive oil mixed with lavender oil and tea tree oil (even when out and about, unless I was wearing foundation) and overtime I developed a pretty bad perioral dermatitis that spread from around my mouth up into the corners of my nose. for a while I just continued using my oil blends thinking MORE would help. ultimately it only got worse until I discovered YOU, Dr. Dray! after I started learning about skincare with your help (daily spf, simple cleansing routine etc) my skin has never looked better and I thank you so much for pulling me out of my “natural” skincare that was ruining my face. Lots of love!!
Wow, three years is a long time to be using one thing!
I spent my teen yrs in Sedona, AZ the height of the new age culture. So all that crap about “natural” being better was drilled into me. Thank goodness I ended up trusting science and choosing better products.
That whole “I can’t pronounce it, so it shouldn’t go on my skin” is very similar to something a particular clean food charlatan likes to say. If those people can’t pronounce the name of a person or place, what do they do? Ignore them? No. If you can’t pronounce something, look it up, sound it out, or ask someone!
“Sound it out” 🤣😂🤣😂
Also, by this logic, any substance is safe as long as you can pronounce it. Suffering from radiation poisoning? Learn to pronounce uranium, and you’re good to go!
👏 You know why they can’t pronounce it? Because they’re not chemists or well-versed in ingredients, their purpose, how they work, how they’re combined, etc. One’s own ignorance has become a litmus test for whether a product is safe..? Seems like if someone actually cared about safety, they’d listen to experts.
I bought that green beauty agenda for yearsss before I found Dr.Dray. Green beauty nearly ruined my skin, my skin was red, blotchy, and irritated 24/7. I was still breaking out like a I was still going through puberty in my late 20’s. I knew it was time to give it up. It wasn’t working and I was tired of trying to keep hiding my skin. I am happy to say that the previous 2 years my skin has never looked better since I started taking Dr.Dray’s advice. I get so many compliments on my skin now and I’m so glad I saw that video she had posted about the clean beauty scam. THANK YOU, YOU SAVED MY SKIN!!
I tried that “clean” beauty stuff like 10 plus years ago…the tiny amount of product and the ridiculous pricing in addition to it irritating my sensitive skin sent me back to regular skincare. I’ve always been a fan of French skincare basics (with no fragrance!) and now I’ve added a few Korean skincare oroducts
This is so true! The amount of money I’ve saved since ditching clean beauty… And my skin has never been better 😊
Team Chemical! 😂😂😂 I have been burnt (quite literally) by so many of those “natural” products. Lots of irritation and rashes. All disappeared when I went back to the chemical products. Thanks for continuing to call out the natural BS, that the “clean” companies are promoting, Dr Dray!
This makes me think about all the people, including teachers who use the infusers in their homes and classrooms putting all the essential oils and other chemicals into the air they and their kids breathe all day. I think these should be banned in schools but I really get a lot of flack when I mention it at work. I work in an elementary School.
I had a client ask if the makeup I was using on her was “clean”. Should have seen her face when I said “there’s no such thing!” 😂 she got a Dr Dray approved education on how it’s all a load of crap! And if she didn’t believe me (an trained esthetician) ask her dermatologist!
It feels weird how people use the term “clean” specifically. Like green and natural, I somewhat get. But why clean???
QUEEN 👸 ❤ Wonderful video. About 15 years ago, I was trusting the EWG and threw out every product I owned that contained parabens. As someone that is typically data driven, I cringe at the idea of being so easily manipulated. Thank you for your honest and to the point videos, they are such a service! We all appreciate you so much 🤗🤗
I never got into the whole clean beauty thing, thank goodness. Lord knows I’ve fallen for a lot of crazy skin care ideas over the years. Awesome topic and as always, respect and value your opinion. Thanks so much. Happy Tuesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a restful evening. 💙
Love this. To your point about fragrance-free products containing scented ingredients, I had noticed that my fragrance-free shaving cream had benzaldehyde and its characteristic almond scent and wondered what that was about. Now that makes sense that it has other purposes in the formulation. Also organic chemistry is super interesting and it’s kind of sad that people seem to almost brag about their ignorance of it when it comes to clean and natural products.
It’s about time that someone exposes the truth about the “all natural” trend.
