Yeah, dermatographia is interesting, fortunately mine is pretty mild. It mostly shows up if I’m scratching with my nails. It looks terrible, and if you’re bad at jumping rope (I have no coordination istg), it will cause raised lines wherever it lands (I found out the hard way in elementary school. It looked like I got whipped for about ten minutes). Plus, once the lines appear, it starts getting itchy and next thing I know, my arms and legs will be red with wide lines wherever my fingers scratch. Instead I have to rub my hands where it’s itchy to avoid having the itch multiply.
Hi Dr. Dray! Thanks for covering this potentially miserable condition. My body suddenly presented itself with “writing hives” and I was diagnosed with chronic Dermatographia shortly after a retinal detachment surgery. The allergist believed it may have presented itself because of the trauma my body went through during the surgery–or perhaps it was because my body didn’t do well with the anesthesia they used. When the symptoms first started, I didn’t understand what was happening. I did the absolute worst thing. I scratched myself raw, and in some places, made myself bloody. Of course, everywhere I scratched, strange puffy hives appeared. It became so uncomfortable, and my body was under so much stress, I actually had a syncope episode. My first and only. The allergist prescribed a “cocktail” of different types of antihistamines until my symptoms settled back down and the scratched areas healed. I am now on two different types of antihistamines. One I take in morning, and one at night. Lately, I’ve been cutting them in half because I’ve developed Sjogrens, and I don’t want anything drying my membranes any more than they already are. But, sadly, I do notice I’m more itchy now. *Sigh. Anyway, thank you for all you do! I appreciate you taking the time to educate. I regularly watch your channel. God bless! :)
Mine started more than 8 years ago after I had my child. I’ve consistently been on a cocktail of antihistamines as well as Ranitidine. Only the itching was improved, not the redness. Xolair has completely changed my life. I can finally enjoy the summer weather and comfortable clothing. No one thinks I’m abused anymore.
I used to get this when I was little, it made my skin crawl seeing the welts. What was worse is that I live in a tropical country so it was worse during the hotter days, I discovered that using my grandmothers Jean Nate after showering made it feel much better and go away. It just stopped one day and never happened again.
I was diagnosed with this condition when I was in my 20’s. I found when I cut out gluten and sugar it went away. It was occurring from a damaged gut barrier.
I’ve had this so bad that my dermatologist invited med students to show them how bad it can be lol. He seemed so fascinated haha. Fortunately it’s almost gone now

I actually had that when I was a young woman (21+ yo). It was kind of cool but it eventually stopped.

I had this happen once when I was having an allergic reaction to something I ate. It was wild!
Doc ❤❤❤❤❤
Sarna lotion is good to ease symptoms. It does not contain a steriod.
I had this when I went through a period of stress. Anti-anxiety/antihistamine helped.

My LO got it around age 5 spontaneously and it gets bad. I hope it can calm down with time.
I have that since 1987.
It gets worse in cold temperature. May be cold temps is enhancing hyper sensitivity! Not sure.
I had this for like 4 months. I used to write my name on my arm all the time and then watch it fade away lol
It’s always awkward when someone gasps and points out some mark on me I didn’t know about. I have to say it’s fine… really… I promise. 😅

Whoever decided to call this condition _to write on skin_ had a very, let’ s call it peculiar, sense of humour😏…
Girl yes this happens from many reasons♡
Can you please recommend the best face wash for our teen daughters? Thank you!
I took both Zyrtec and Pepcid ac daily and it really controlled my dermatographism
I have reactive sensitive skin. Avene Tolerance Control Cream is a life saver!
