My father had German measles when he was 4 years old, and it led to some mild permanent hearing loss. He doesn’t wear hearing aids but probably should.

My brother and I had the measles during the March, 1957, SF earthquake (Richter scale 7.0). I remember being in bed, head on the pillow , watching all the pictures sway, closet door swaying, etc., and feeling too poorly to get out of bed. Our father was a geophysicist and earthquake specialist at the San Bruno Naval yard. We had been drilled on what to do during an earthquake but we were too ill to do anything. Our recovery took quite a while until we had our energy back.
Measles are no joke. There were many babies born later that year with congenital deafness.

The first year of my teaching career I was teaching in a school in Amarillo, Texas, where the students who were deaf were taught in a school next door to my school. These students were from the tristate area (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.) There had been a big outbreak of measles when most of their mothers were pregnant and this deafness was due to the measles. I had three of the students in my mainstream math classes.
