I can't talk about "My Life Online" without discussing one of the biggest things to happen to me online: I was cancelled. In June 2020, I faced a lot of backlash after announcing I became a co-owner of my skincare brand Naturium. And rather than trying to explain everything, I decided to just focus on building my brand and have never publicly talked about what happened. So today, for the first time ever, I'm sharing some much needed context surrounding the "Susan Yara Naturium drama."

I don’t think so Susan. You already know what is the right thing to do as an influencer has 2 million followers, the trust and belief we all had for you ended when you didn’t do us right. We deserve to know and would love you to share your journey as other influencer we followed would done the opposite take us along the journey. And to be honest, everything thing you said when first promoting and discussing the products was an honest review in terms of the quality and efficacy of the products themselves… Can’t fault that from the get-go the Naturium products were great. This brand has completely changed my skincare routine as it has high quality and AFFORDABLE skincare products that work. I will be forever grateful that this brand really allowed me to commit to a skincare routine month after month without feeling like I have to break the bank.
I remember thinking people way over reacted I hadn’t even been a follower for that long and it was blatantly obvious to me that you just genuinely wanted it to be a surprise for everyone and I’m so glad it’s gone on to the success it’s become as I could not do without the body washes lol xxx

Fascinating listen. So much I want to say. The perils of parasociality; the way power is exerted toward the upper middle class bc they feel powerless to actual governmental decision makers; less is more is truly the way; the perfect storm of the situation and how this type of thing will likely never be replicated; how the actual timeline is leas juicy; how conscious consumerism goes awry; etc.

I think the pandemic forcing people to pay attention, where they hadn’t before, lead to people who don’t have security or resources to feel so disillusioned with how thoroughly we as the general public have been failed. That we’re truly on our own, and have been on our for a while now.
For a nation where healthcare, especially mental and behavioral healthcare is SO inaccessible. People have genuine fears, concerns, frustrations that they can’t do anything about. And that uncertainty and crisis in faith of the government, other institutions, other people, and in your own safety just opens the doors for people to fall into a cult mentality that makes it easy for others to take advantage of them and whip up a mob to fight for “the cause” and execute a plan, because they believe they are moral righteous and upright.
When our governments literally try to stifle community building efforts, isolating us more and more, people will look for it in any way they can. Even when it doesn’t provide what they’re really needing.
When you begin to believe that you have the sole ability to identify who is and isn’t moral, when you feel justified in interrogating people to verify their morality, and using who you are as the yard stick. It just creates such an easy excuse to enforce abuse onto others and to frame it as not just righteous but as something that needs to be done for other people’s safety.
It makes people feel in control when they otherwise don’t, and it’s self aggrandizing. It’s just funny because people think they’re operating in opposition to the “status quo”. They frame it as attempts to take justice into their own hands, because of how unjust our systems are, but they’re too high on their own supply to recognize that what they’re doing is just more of the same that makes them feel so unsafe.
They are just reaffirming the preexisting structures, because those same feelings and justifications are the exact same things used to build everything we currently have that is failing us, that is brutalizing people, and only seeks to offer punishment as a form of correction for what it deems to be “wrong”.
I can’t believe folks still whine about this. Susan, you make good products, it’s been 4 years, tell folks to buzz off!! I love Naturium and you🩷
