  1. I used Accutane twice in my 30s. Worked great while I was taking it and for a few months after discontinuing it. My acne slowly came back. My Dermatologist said it was because it was hormonal.

    1. Isn’t all acne hormonal? I have mine for years since i was teenager, in recent years (im 22 now) I’ve been using topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic and salicylic acid. It helps, but i still get pimples on a regular basis and im thinking about starting isotretinoin because im tired of hyperpigmentation and scaring, but what if it’s not gonna help because my acne is “hormonal”, what else can I do? I also have been using anti androgens for years, my testosterone is low af, but still meh

  2. Accutane was a God-send when I was in high school. Nothing else had worked. I’m so thankful my parents got it for me and were able to afford it. My understanding is that it’s much more affordable now (25 years later).

  3. It did help me, but now around 1 year after finishing my treatment some of skin problems did come back. Not as bad as before and not in all areas (my worst was back probably and it’s still fine) but still. I was on a low dose treatment for a year. I wonder if we stopped it too early.

  4. I took at 30 and I was clear for 25 years. Now at 68 I have these inclusion cysts on my chin for the last 20 years and I cannot get rid of them. I’ve tried everything including a bout of Accutane but it was low dose.

  5. Accutane was great for my rosacea, but it ruined my night vision, ruined my lips (1 year later they’re still dry and peeling) and totally killed my libido. It’s a Faustian pact imho, I would think twice before taking it if my derm suggested to put me on it again.

    1. It was horrible for my rosacea and it destroyed my lips (10 years later struggling more than ever) BUT it saved my life.

  6. I did Accutane when I was 16 for cystic acne. Though it helped for a while, I instantly broke out in psoriasis which I have been battling for over 15 years since. Not to mention a handful of other side effects. And I still will get the occasional cyst. A few a year at least. I honestly regret going on it due to long term effects.

  7. I did accutane around 2~3 years ago and my acne is back like it was before. My skin did stay pretty clear up until maybe 2 years afterwards. I dont think I’d redo it though just because of the inconvenience of having to do blood tests every month, the costs of everything, and my joints were killing me the entire time and it freaked me out

    1. Scarring 😅 learned it the hard way. Because Accutane treats acne rapidly, it also means the heal time is different from typical acne, hence why you’re likely to develop severe scarring after an Accutane trial

    2. I had a horrible skin picking disorder and that’s why accutane worked soooo well for me. It improved my skin fast and that’s exactly what I needed to see not to pick it (you pick because you chase perfection). Once it improved just a bit I no longer picked it so much and then less and less. It saved my life and I only took it at 33…

  8. I’ve taken Accutane twice. While it treated my cystic acne, I still have comedonal and hormonal acne. It’s incredibly discouraging. And yes, I took it with a scoop of peanut butter every single time.
Contemplating a third dose, but not sure why it would be different this time around.

    1. @@Sara_Lindros yeah the average is lower but a study found this one prevents recurrence the most. I work for a yale derm who has his patients meet that dose and he always explains why. if you google you can find the study.

  9. I (28 M) had quite moderate to severe acne as a teen and Accutane was super helpful. Unfortunately my acne suddenly came back worse than ever 3 years ago, so my derm and I have decided to try again next time I see her if this last round of oral antibiotics doesn’t work (which they are not a month in, lol). Not sure what that’s about.

  10. Accutane worked for me. They told me after I start Accutane, my acne would get worse before it got better. They were right! My acne got worse for a while, but then it started getting better. After treatment, my cystic acne was cleared up. I did get some minor pimples now and again over the years, but no more cystic acne! I was happy!

  12. Accutane actually cured my comedonal acne. I was 28 years old when I took it. I took low dose and then increased after 2 months and then decreased again as I came to the end of my treatment. I would take it again if I had to. I had minimal side effects and my skin is still clear almost 2 years later.
