Okay, so Hi Dr. Dray. I think the brand is trying to assuage their guilt through their response. And I agree with you, ‘ they should have said, nothing.’ By responding so aggressively they appear to be suspicious. Now if more people are coming out with the same claim—then they may have a problem. Whole thing just seems weird and🤨

So bizarre that the brand got super defensive in your comments… not a good look. It seems totally possible that the device could act as a trigger for Bell’s palsy or nerve damage, even if it’s not necessarily the direct cause. I was never interested in purchasing the device anyway, but as someone who’s had reactivated viral illnesses before, I will probably steer clear of these electrical impulse gadgets just to be cautious.
Because they could be SUED to kingdom come!

If the company is so confident, they should be open to a study to confirm that there is no increased rate of palsy in those using the device. People get facial palsy all the time for all kinds of reasons. The company should want to know if their device causes harm. And there should also not be fear mongering around the device if it is shown to not have an increased risk of palsy after it is studied.
I’m shocked that that particular Engineer held up a text of Adams and Victor’s Principles of Neurology twelfth edition from 1923. Why didn’t he show us a peer reviewed research paper written in the last year. Now I want to go find papers on Bell’s Palsy not related to viruses or fungi…
If anyone has experienced problems like this after using one of these devices, please report it to the FDA. They have a form on their website for reporting problems with medical devices.
While we still have an FDA… some want to get rid of it. They fear scientific research and prove results.

Also it’s totally normal for pretty much ANYTHING to aggravate nerve pain. So little is known about nerve pain but I know so many people that have nerve pain/ damage from so many different sources- I have a pinched nerve in my shoulder from (probably) bad posture, my husband has facial nerve pain from something to do with his sinuses, my friend has neuropathic pain in her eyes from lasik, my other friend got nerve pain in his back from getting injured during zip lining… I can go on and on. So even though it’s impossible to know, people need to realize how many random things can cause nerve pain.

I know a little about Bell’s Palsy. I am a nurse and have seen it in patients and my own mother. I agree with Dr. Dray, I don’t think it can be proven that the device caused her palsy however I believe it is entirely possible that it could have. As the doctor said the Herpes virus exists in all of us and it seems to wait until the conditions are favorable in the body, such as an illness or a trauma to express itself. What is a trauma? Well you have to be the judge.

There’s no research to show electrical stimulation can cause Bell’s Palsy because this stuff is new and no one has bothered to do studies and trials on it.
But it’s okay to use something new and barely tested, even to require it, right?

They said breast implants were safe for decades and now they say that you could get implant illness! Time will tell but to say that it’s impossible is disgusting imo!

As Dr. Ozumba (Chem) told me in my first year of grad school: “Science is full of unknowns and surprises, some good, some not so good. Rule out nothing. Exclusion of possibilities is the work of business, not science.”
In FDA-regulated science, we do not use the word “impossible”. Instead we say, “a direct correlation has not been established,” or “based upon the results of X, Y or Z study, ABC shows promise in the treatment of,” or we say, “further research is recommended in the following areas.” My opinion: a good scientist is skeptical, humble, curious, and a good listener. A good scientist will say, “I don’t know,” if they do not know.
What a beautiful comment and unfortunately something the vast majority of people haven’t been taught at school. Without that crucial piece of information a confident snakeoil salesman who talks in absolutes might just sound completely legit.
Glad you posted this as I had planned to buy one. Medical science changes daily especially as more people start using various devices and present more symptoms.
What I find confusing is that they used to advertise that machine by claiming that it is STRONGER than most other devices, hence why so many people were getting it. Now they’re saying that it’s weaker than most???

I have great respect for electrical engineers, however, I’m not sure they are fully qualified to be giving such definitive medical opinions.
The company response was so strange. Nothing can be declared “impossible” for everyone. You made such a good point about the high probability that at least one of the whole family of herpes viruses are dormant in most people, just waiting for conditions and stressors to allow it to reemerge.
The other thing he said- that devices like theirs can “treat, not cause” nerve issues was also weird. He’s saying that there is, in fact, a link between devices like the Medicube and nerve issues.
It makes me think of something like caffeine- it can treat migraines and it can *also* cause them because there is a link between the migraine process and caffeine.
