I have seen an uptick in cherry angiomas due to a vector-borne infection, Babesiosis. It may be something else to look into, as well as the statin.

Interesting. I’ve taken zoloft for 5 years and I’ve never experienced any skin problems. I do wear sunscreen religiously though.

Dr Dray, can you do a reaction video on Bobby Parish? He’s made a lot of videos covering personal care products (shampoo, soap, deodorant, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc.) and claims most of them contain “toxic, dirty chemicals.”
i have one on tiktok reacting to him, but didnt realize he was doing the same here on Youtube with skincare
@Dr Dray yes, his most recent video is a short of him dissing almost every drugstore kids personal care product. He’s made a video a couple of weeks ago doing the same to shampoo, lotion, and deodorant. He hates petrolatum and basically every skin brand.

I was on minocycline along with birth control for acne a couple years ago. It turned my gums a blueish grey and caused a big blue spot on my leg. Thankfully it faded after I stopped taking it 😬
Yes, can stain the teeth too
I also took it for acne (it really helped) and a while later I had my wisdom teeth pulled… The roots of the teeth were stained gray! It was pretty cool, but I realize that I’m lucky that the staining I got wasn’t visible.
@Dr Dray A lot of people are on corticosteroids like Prednisolone (tablets) for different reasons as it is such a versatile medicine. It also has a lot of side-effects, so it would be nice to see how it affects the skin.

Its ridiculous to think that I’m on a few of these medicines and I have never been told about this.

I take an atypical antidepressant called Mirtazpine ( which is also an appetite stimulant and used for patients with dementia ) I noticed my skin tends to look more fair
I beleived it when I saw it. I have cushings and it can for some cause over production of melanin and for me it did. My skin darkened several shades in winter, my eyes darkened..etc I hyperpigmentation like crazy during summer but I’m also very sensitive to the sun as well . So, I’m very careful of the products I use so it won’t encourage more melanin production. I think it has to do with how the liver and kindeys breaks and stores hormones/chemicals . Could be wrong but just my assumption.

I am aware that taking Tetracycline makes a person more sensitive to the sun and can also stain the teeth. Also, for ladies it causes another issues as well. Take care everyone ♥
Prozac has caused me to have a terrible rash on my entire body when I was 16. I had to stop going to school because I realized that my skin would become inflamed and my rash would worsen in the sun.
I have been on hydroxychloroquin for 20 years and Enbrel injections for about 10 years. My hyperpigmentation and skin cancers both began around the time I started Enbrel. I’m not sure if their related but it’s interesting. I’m dealing with the hyperpigmentation and hopefully skin cancers with Tretinoin. Interesting video Dr. Dray! Thanks for the info!
Even though I never heard of this, it took me two seconds to google the mechanism. Fluoxetine has been shown to up-regulate the production of melanin in both melanoma cells and in regular melanocytes and has even been proposed as a treatment for hypopigmentation disorders (Schallreuter et al 2007). Incidentally I stopped prescribing fluoxetine about 30 years ago – we have far better ssris. I think this was a great video but the TikTok people talking about how all their doctors are mystified must live somewhere with no internet access because I literally found this on google – no login to the med school library needed.
I’ve known that certain medications can affect the skin but didn’t realize that they could affect the skin to such an extreme extent. Thanks for the info. Happy Thursday, Dr Dray! Hope you have a lovely evening. 💜

I have seen chemotherapy change a persons general skin tone, giving them a darker, ashy colour especially closer to the area it is injected into and the area that it was intended to treat. Likewise I have also noticed that radiotherapy increases the hyperpigmentation in the area it’s used. (I say increase because the person already had hyperpigmentation from the chemo)
