  1. I feel like I hit the jackpot because I never got any purging or skin sensitivity from starting retinol. Just a little peeling here and there when it’s super dry outside. I have very sensitive skin that reacts to everything else, but using the moisturizer sandwich method with retinol has worked perfectly. I’m 34 and have the best skin I’ve ever had as an adult! 😊

    1. Am I safe to assume that when you say “moisturizer sandwich,” that means you’re applying a moisturizer first, then the retinol and then another layer of moisturizer? I haven’t heard of this method and I’m thinking of trying retinol for the first time so I’m doing all the research I can. I just turned 38 and I’ve never seen a dermatologist but I’m currently looking around and learning as much as I can in the meantime. I’m lucky that I don’t look my age and I’d like to keep it that way lol

    2. @@KyraLuciaI use aquaphor and then I apply my retinoid. Works like a charm without the excess drying. 🙌🏼

    3. retinoid skin penetration is about 8% with normal skin

If you use these awkward sandwich and baguette techniques it will approach 0.
That’s why you get no peeling

Peeling means the retinoid penetrated the skin. Its a good sign.

  2. I LoVe Differin❤question, what about w Ivermectin? Is true will break out first weeks of use bc the mites decompose inside the hair follicles or sebaceous glands?

    1. I have never heard about this?? And no, it didn’t happen when I started using it. Pretty much just calmed everything down overnight. What I’ve been told, though, is that there’s a time limit on using it for some reason??

    2. @@spookylittlebat5208Dr Dray has vids on Demodex mites. Everyone has demodex mites but ppl w rosacea have more having too many Demodex mites on the skin can trigger a reaction and lead to rosacea.

    3. @@Novemberrain111 do they decompose, as you mentioned, with retinol use?? Or the other drug you mentioned?? I must know now!! lol

  3. I also saw a video where a lady(not a dermatologist) explained why she would recommend to apply a retinoid on damp skin whenever one’s skin gets used to it. Would you recommend that as well?

    1. That’s a good question, I have no reaction to it (I never had, even in the beginning stages it never gave me sensitivity) but I’m still applying it to dry skin and then moisturizing. I’m curious if it would work better if used on damp skin due to better absorption for those of us that can tolerate it

  4. But what should i do 😭 i purged for 6 months i didnt even have acne before and now i have the biggest zits ever 😭😭 i just wanted good complexion and anti aging

    1. If by traditional, you mean physical exfoliants then yes but in a different way. Small lesions are created in the skin when you over exfoliate with scrubs and scour pads/loofas (of which can also hold bacteria in the shower) and these lesions become infected leading to acne. You shouldn’t be physically exfoliating daily or you can expect to get breakouts

  5. NO WONDER 😂 I just started using this as a retinoid and I saw a few little acne spots on my jaw line area.
    I never break out 😅

  6. So for adapalene in particular, are you _not_ supposed to have worse skin for months before it gets better? I’m looking to start it and I’m anxious about the purging.

    1. It should only be a few weeks not months. I don’t listen to anyone saying it should last longer, only listen to derms. I didn’t realize I was reacting badly to it because everyone said it was normal to purge for that long (several months for me) turns out it wasn’t for me and now I’m on tret and happy with my complexion.

    2. Also use thick face cream, then after a few minutes apply a tiny bit of adapalene. I’ve been using it for ten years now and I don’t get acne breakouts and my skin looks great🎉

  7. You have got to got absolutely have to keep your face clean using retinol and a have a routine. Gotta at the very least wipe it off with a clean wipe in the morning and wash you your pillow cases and brushes more than usual. I had such bad purging so many time that it resulted in me giving up on it all together several times over the years..but once I a got a regular 9 to 5 job which came with regular bedtime routine and helped me push through the rough patch..I’m so grateful to say retinol FINALLY does the opposite of all the negative traits in the beginning and I no longer have an adult acne problem

    1. @@inexcelsisdeo8475 insightful. Will you please explain why the need to wash pillow cases and brushes while using retinol??? Skin flaking? Does that mean more bacteria??

  8. A did everything by the book with adapalene, and used all of Dr. Dray’s tips for it and I still got the months of awful breakouts. I initially got it for the anti-aging effects, I had virtually no acne before using it so I just screwed myself over. Thankfully I went to a dermatologist and it was all resolved with tret that I still use to this day. My skin looks more flawless than ever; i recently started using it on the back of my hands, my neck, and my chest! I could never figure out why it broke me out so bad for months as someone who never had severe acne like that, the dermatologist just gave me tretinoin with little explanation.

    1. How u started using tretinoin and in which concentration? I’m using adaplene on alt nights from 3 months after accutane and wanna use tretinoin 0.05% now

    2. It could’ve had something to do with either the strength or the formulation of the product. They’re the same type of active but technically are different ingredients, your skin may have just not liked one of them!

  9. Correct. That’s why I gave up on Retin A after consistent use over two years. My breakouts never stopped. The only topical that helps me is benzoyl peroxide.

    1. I been on the same strength for a long time and still sometimes get a whitehead or two from what I think is some amount of irritation or sensitivity from using tret. 🤷‍♀️

If I had to guess, maybe a wee bit too much product was applied to certain areas. 🤔

  10. That happened to me when I first started a retinoid. My forehead became a rash of colourless bumps all over (I was only putting it on my forehead at the time) – and I didn’t normally have more than one or two pimples a month before that. I had to cut some bangs to hide it. It went on for 4-5 months, then disappeared, just as I was about to give it up. Strange tho, because I was using Peter Thomas Roth’s Retinol Fusion PM at the time, and its ingredients are so minimal: Cyclopentasiloxane, Squalane, Water, Retinol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Bisabolol, Lecithin, Potassium Phosphate, Pentylene Glycol, Polysorbate-20, Alcohol. I specifically got that one because I can’t bear fragrance in skin products.

  11. I have started tretinoin this month. Today is going to be my 5th application, so far so good alhamdulillah.

  12. When I came to see my dermatologist after 5 months of waiting for an appointment regarding this problem (new breakouts after long time on retinoids) – she recommended to stop using benzoyl peroxide because she doesn’t like it 🤡
