Is there ever a time anti bacterial is necessary?
i’m on immunosuppressants so i do prefer to use it sometimes even if it just makes me feel like i’m doing something less risky
I never buy antibac hand soap either for the same reasons!
What’s the difference between antibacterial and antimicrobial? I sometimes use Hibicleans antimicrobial wash, is this just as bad as antibacterial soap?
Same thing. Bacteria are microbes
Not the same. Hibiclens doesn’t have the same antimicrobial as antibacterial soap. It also continues killing microbes for 24 hours after use. It’s used by medical professionals as a preop scrub. People with certain skin conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa also use it.
Ingredients. Active Ingredients: Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution (4.0 % w/v). Purpose: Antiseptic. Inactive Ingredients: Fragrance, Gluconolactone, Isopropyl Alcohol 4% w/v, Lauramine Oxide, Poloxamer 237, Purified Water, Red 40.

My husband is a heart transplant recipient and those antibacterial washes are useful for washing up before hospital visits.
agreed!! i’m on immunosuppressants for MS and i do prefer to use an antibacterial soap at times, especially post doctors visits or if i’ve been cleaning up after my pets
i live in Ireland and it seems like no anti-bacterial soaps here actually have benzalkonium chloride in them. Carex is probably the most popular here and doesn’t have BC, neither does another popular brand Radox. Dettol is a brand that makes BC wipes and sprays, but their soap doesn’t have it either. i wonder if it’s just less common in soaps outside of the US?
i’m conscious of benzalkonium chloride because it’s poisonous to animals and i have pets, i do also like to use anti bac soap at times because i’m on immunosuppressants for MS though either way

Might be a stupid question but would the same apply for general cleaning products? Like for counters and other surfaces?
Dawn blue dish washing liquid fir dishes and counters. Use the Dawn blue, and vinegar and warm water (about half a cup Dawn blue, half a cup vinegar and four cups warm water) then spread over sinks and shower walls, scrub and rinse. It’s perfect.

Why are they legal? Why do hospitals use antibacterial soaps. I took a class in 1998 for biology and the professor explained back then the harm of antibacterial products. He warned of viruses strengthening due to over usage of antibacterial products. Yikes.
I saw Neutrogena’s Alcohol-Free toner having benzalkonium chloride, as well as an oil-free eye makeup remover. Oh, and their Oil-free acne wash too

Ugh…..wish I knew this 10 years ago! I purposely looked for antibacterial hand soaps bc I wanted the extra protection.
I don’t use them at home but I think public restrooms all use antibacterial soap. So I wash my hands about five times a day at work
