Thank you for a great breakdown of the harmful ingredients. I always read the ingredient list before purchasing stuff but don’t have any specialty background for searching out bad and good ingredients on my own. So these videos are quite helpful
I am not a fan of both the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner, however their leave-in products like their oil, serum, and smoothing cream I can’t live without. They’ve done wonders for my hair since I use a lot of heat styling.

My experience with Olaplex has been nothing but AMAZING! As I have gotten older my hair has gotten wirier. Olaplex literally helped me restore to my youthful silky hair

As a stylist who uses olaplex, the products can easily be overused which can lead to issues with the hair. This is not fault of the product, but often the user. So many people believe more is better, but that is just not the case with most products! People will also try to order olaplex products online from Amazon or CVS, which are not authorized retailers. I’ve tried to steer so many people from trying to save a few dollars by buying from unauthorized sellers but people don’t typically want to listen. While I do feel sorry for these ladies, I don’t think they have much to stand on. There are hundreds of thousands of people who use olaplex products with no issue.
Side note- my sister has struggled severely with hair loss since she had Covid. It did not start for a few months after the infection. It’s also greatly changed her menstrual cycle.
Then Olaplex is to blame, because they insist that it cannot be “overused”.
At any rate, how do you yse shampoo and conditioner?
Whilst i don’t personally leave it on overnight I did notice the Olaplex website advises: “we do not recommend sleeping in OLAPLEX treatments as it could get into your eyes.”
So the only reasoning is to avoid getting it in your eyes, to which I’d say people would still attempt after a risk assessment on case by case basis. I think the aggression of this conversation is pretty sad, and I sympathize with anyone trying to pinpoint the cause of their hairloss or other symptoms whether it be due to Olaplex or not.
A simple search of the olaplex website would have taken less effort than commenting to blame those suffering for misusing the product and/or lying. So sad and I wish those affected on a swift recovery.
About thirty years ago a stylist told me, head n shoulders shampoo had similar ingredients as carpet shampoo. I never used that thankfully., who knows.

@roooose16 I strongly recommend you see a trichologist. Seriously, you might think is whatever product you’re using but if you are checked soon enough you can revert the process. It can be a lack of certain vitamins, minerals, hormonal, or allergies that can start at any age… I’m saying this because I started like that 20+ years ago when Olaplex was not even a thing and I had androgenetic alopecia. I hope you have something less serious but please get checked. Millions use Olaplex without issues, so it probably is something relating to your health, don’t disregard it. Cheers!

Probably all the shampoo companies are trying to tarnish Olaplex reputation because Olaplex stay winning.
Or probably a lot of women (including myself) really did lose clumps of hair thanks to Olaplex. They deserve all the backlash they’re getting.
Exactly! Every few years they try with a different company and obviously always fail since it can’t be scientifically proven. It’s a lot of anecdotal evidence of people who happen to experience hair loss due to life stress, lack of iron /vitamins or underlying illness 🤷🏼♀️

@roooose16 actually most of the lawsuits just settle out-of-court not that they fail. But sorry if you are having good hair and then all of a suddenly you use a shampoo or conditioner or whatever and you start instantly noticing something wrong and then you stopped and problem goes away it was clearly what it is that you were using shampoo conditioner or whatever. Besides some of these companies were literally sued because they were damaging and burning the scalps of actual children. Some brands had children unable to even grow their hair back.
I’ve only used the Olaplex #3 treatment for years now as I only need bond repair (not a new shampoo/conditioner/leave-in regimen) and it has the greatest concentration of the bond repair ingredient. Haven’t had any negative effects at all. In fact, my hair is thriving.
I do feel so much compassion for these women who’ve been negatively impacted because I actually experienced hair loss and curl pattern & texture changes from using the previous formulation of the DevaCurl supercream (I regularly used it as a finisher styler on only certain parts of my hair where my curl pattern wasn’t uniform and/or wouldn’t cooperate and those areas were the only areas that experienced significant breakage and loss of texture after only a few months of product usage).
It sucks when sudden hair damage occurs regardless of the reason or catalyst, so I hope these women’s hair and scalp conditions improve soon.
I don’t know the individual situations of the plaintiffs, but the symptoms that were mentioned sounds to me like what happens when people over bleach their hair, bleach their hair too often, use a peroxide strength that is too high and/or leave the lightening mixture (bleach & peroxide) on for too long, lighten their hair on a sunburnt scalp and/or use products that are past their expiry date.
All/some of these symptoms can occur when people lighten their hair at home, or with an inexperienced/over-worked operator in a salon setting, or someone working from home.
I have previously worked in the hair & beauty industry and have had bleached platinum blonde hair for many years. Many people seem to think that Olaplex products are “magic bullets”. Many like to think that it allows someone to leave extreme lightening products on the hair for a limitless amount of time and/or treat the hair/scalp in an aggressive manner (after rinsing out the bleach and when styling it afterwards)….It is a great product range, but IT IS NOT MAGIC! The instructions, guidelines and common sense still have to be followed. Also patch testing must be done when using a product the first time, or if your health situation changes. If a patch test was done and it didn’t irritate the skin, then it was probably not likely that the Olaplex caused the symptoms. The only thing I think it did (and it isn’t the product’s fault) was to give the user/s a false sense of security.
There is apparently a lot of counterfeit Olaplex on the market also.
This situation reminds me when CDs first came on the market. People thought that because CDs didn’t break or scratch as easily as vinyl records that you could fling them across the room. Back in the day, I actually saw someone do this to demonstrate, while showing off their new CD player & CDs… It didn’t go well!
Btw, Lilial is still being sold in Australia, but some media are still saying that pregnant woman should be cautious. This is only done as a precaution, because they don’t test such products on pregnant women; so there is no data to say that it is safe or unsafe for them.

Sometimes clients choose not to disclose their full medical history with hairstylists. Of course it’s understandable for privacy reasons, but sometimes some clients may not mention that they have had seborrheic dermatitis in the past (for instance), because they think that the hair stylist may decide that they not want the risk the possibility of the client having an adverse reaction to the product/s and then choose not to go ahead with the service.

It’s really stressful for anyone suffering with any form of hair loss or scalp issues to see these types of stories. Especially when the products involved cost so much and typically carry the high hopes of so many people. I do have this hair care line, but tend to use sparingly due to the exorbitant cost.
I’ve seen the same lawsuits levied at the Wen Hair care line.. and I definitely believed that one. Maybe unfairly? I don’t know.. but what I do know is I don’t have enough surplus hair to try it, ha! Hard to believe I once had waist length hair and did “hair modeling”.. now it looks like wet seaweed on a rock!

As many have said already, Olaplex is great when used PROPERLY! I remember years ago when the No.3 became more readily available for retail there was a spike in negative reviews, but a lot of those people were using it like a conditioner which the bottle specifically says not to do 🤷🏻♀️

I truly appreciate your transparency with regard to paid promotions — it’s pretty reasonable that companies would require pre-approving content before it’s posted, but I don’t think any of us really think about that while watching. I also appreciate that you’re realistic and reality-based about ingredients that some companies vilify, seemingly in hopes of getting the “clean”-obsessed rich and famous to promote them. Thank you for being level-headed and science-based (which should be a low bar for skincare professionals of any kind on social media, but here we are).
I use olaplex in my hairdye, and it has absolutely saved my hair. I have grey hair that needs to be touched up frequently, and hairdye would make my hair come out in clumps. My daughter suggested I try adding olaplex, and I was absolutely floored by how well it worked. Over time, it allowed my hair to grow back in. No more bald spots. I don’t use all of the accompanying products. Maybe that would be too much of a good thing. I don’t know.
I am going to suggest this for my mother who uses box dyes 😮 Can anyone else attest it works?
@Elif Tuzer for me, I had the exact same issue, as I developed grey/white hair with age it became more frizzy/wirey. Used to have poker straight hair 🤦♀️. My hairdresser has used olaplex mixed in with my hair dye (I get my roots touched up every 2to3 weeks, my hair grows quickly) for years, since it first came about, every 2to3 months. It has transformed my hair almost back to the way it used to be. Sounds like I’ve had the very same experience as our fellow DrDray follower, original commenter above. I have never had anything but positive experience with Olaplex, although I have always been extremely careful with it.

@Kunika Gosain my hairdresser uses Olaplex No 3 (Hair Perfector) she mixes a small amount with my hair dye. Then it all gets rinsed out. We do this about every 2to3 months. I would be careful to make sure you get the authentic product and don’t use it as a leave in product.
The phrase “too much of a good thing” is very true in this case. I’ve seen Olaplex do wonders, but you can overdose on it for sure. I’ve seen far to many recommendations on how to use it that are far from the instructed directions😳
I’m a hairstylist and I’ve been using Olaplex since they began. In the beginning you couldn’t even buy their products at a beauty supply you had to order on their website. And they only had 3 products. I add Olaplex to a lot of my chemical services especially when bleach is involved. I’ve used it on my own hair. I’m not a natural blonde my hair is level 3/4 in hair color and Olaplex has saved my hair and many of my clients hair. I have not had anyone have a negative reaction or allergic reaction to any of it. And I even have some clients that have very sensitive scalps and nothing has happened. I do feel that maybe these ppl developed an allergic reaction. I started using a new color line and noticed if I don’t shampoo my scalp well after using it, my scalp will itch like crazy. Do I think the product is dangerous? No. And none of my other clients have experienced allergic reactions so i think it really depends on the individual. Also I think it might be misuse of the product. I remember gifting Olaplex No. 3 to a friend who claimed it made her hair feel dry & brittle, but she was using it as a leave in. That product needs to be shampooed out. Also I always wonder if there are fake products available online but look like Olaplex. I remember seeing something online and the brand said Olaplex and the same font but the actual packaging did not look like Olaplex at all. But this was a long time ago before all these claims came out so I’m not sure if that is still happening. And a lot of time hair loss can be due to poor diet, stress and hormonal changes in the body. And breakage could be due to not proper upkeep of hair like protecting hair against constant heat like blowdrying, curling irons or flat irons. Or proper upkeep after a chemical service such as hair straightening, or highlights and bleaching. Certain types of hair services can be high maintenance such as platinum. Also not getting your hair professionally done in a salon. Also for some, they maybe had so much done to their hair that it maybe past the point of saving? Olaplex or any hair product can only do so much.
I couldn’t get to blonde (from my natural level 2 hair) without it melting off by the time I got to level 7. And that’s considering the fact that I’ve been to a few prestigious hair stylists with high profile clients who really knew their stuff! Olaplex was still relatively new at the time, but my friend recommended I try it just once and I could try going blonde again. She would let me buy olaplex no1 and no2 off her (she had a license) so I could do the treatments myself once a week. Never have I ever been able to grow my hair past the middle of my shoulders, even during the years I wasn’t attempting to get my hair lightened. Olaplex truly persevered my length. I know some people can’t tolerate olaplex, but it’s sad that they discourage others from using it just because THEY had a bad experience.
Exactly what I feel, commented on and have seen in my experience. Except after I is my hairdressing apprenticeship I trimmed, tinted and bleached my own hair (very carefully), as I wasn’t getting it done for free anymore! I never ended up working in a salon as a qualified hairdresser. It was the 1980s and I could earn more working in a nightclub! I could pay my rent, look good and still afford to have fun!😉

As a hairstylist who uses olaplex often I will say this- being mindful of the industrial hair care complex and their marketing values, I don’t recommend using every product in the line together, as that’s a waste of money.
However, I do think olaplex is worth the hype and worth the cost. If it is used properly and according to instructions it helps to permanently bind broken disulfide bonds in the hair that have been broken from both chemical and mechanical damage. It’s very versatile.
Most of the complaints I get from people who say they’ve lost hair or had problems is because they don’t read the instructions, they overuse products, and they’ve either had some serious issue like covid hair loss or hormonal changes on top of their questionable hair routines like using multiple different bonding or protein using products and home remedies using food products or worse from Amazon.
I rarely take my clients complaints at face value because most of the time they don’t know what they’re talking about, and they also don’t understand how their lifestyle and health can affect their hair.
I would not be quick to blame olaplex for hair loss or excessive breakage and damage. Also, young and old almost every single one of my clients is dealing with dry, brittle hair, hair loss , texture changes and or loss of density due to covid and the effects after. That’s just the truth- most people want someone to blame for their Hardship when In reality sometimes there is none to blame for it.
My hairstylist suggested Olaplex when I started getting balayage done, which was about a year and a half ago. The only reason why he even suggested the brand was because I’ve had blonde in my hair before, years ago and my blonde would always start to look brassy and would lose the vibrant blonde colors. The blonde looks absolutely amazing for over a year and so far no issues. Also I only use the product 2x a week maaaayyyyybbbeee 3 🤷🏻♀️ …. So I dunno …. I’m good ova here lol
My stylist has added Olaplex to my chemical treatments for many years. The difference with and without is stunning. After I realized that, I’ll never color without it!
I sympathize with the ladies who are suffering hair loss. I had 4 rounds of chemo in 2016, and losing my hair was even more traumatizing than I feared it would be. 😢😢
I remember when the Tresemme in the red bottle was allegedly causing hair loss according to the media, and it was weird that my daughter had mentioned she started losing a lot of hair in the shower (and this rumor was unbeknownst to her at the time she mentioned it to me) and I asked her what shampoo products was she using, cause I remember hearing about TRESemme and it just so happened to be that particular brand in the red bottle that she started using and I had told her about that claim I just happened to hear about and she has no medical issues whatsoever, and has always had super thick beautiful hair and after I told her about that shampoo, she threw it out, shortly after she stopped using it, she stopped losing her hair. so I believe yes some hair products may certainly can be the cause. there’s so many products out there that have caused so many health issues, that we never knew about in the past until we start seeing all these commercials of lawsuits. so in my opinion you just never know, the best thing you can do is stay in tune with your body, only you know yourself best and when something changes with a new product, best thing one can do, is omit it and see if the problem subsides.
