  1. I remember my Mother talking to me about this when she went through Menopause. Her doctor said that women don’t feel comfortable talking about this and was grateful that my Mom discussed this issue . So then my Mom felt that it was her mission to talk to her 3 daughters! I just love how my Mom always wanted to keep her daughters informed !

    2. @Whitney Brown Thank you! I am doing very well. I hope the same for you! So nice to have this time to break away and talk to other women 😀

  2. I’m post menopausal and deal more with the sensation of soreness rather than itch, though that’s also present from time to time.
I see my GYN next month and will address it with him.
I’m going to entertain any solutions he might bring up.
    Enough is enough!
Thank you, Doc. Always get useful information from you!

  3. What about fungal infections? You didnt mention that. Are they uncommon on the skin of the vulva? Because i’ve had some itching there and i’ve been using an antifungal ointment (the doctor is not even sure….)

    1. Yes, I did mention infection in general as a possible cause, but this video focuses on common allergens and irritants in personal care products

  4. Menopausal vaginal atrophy is BEYOND itch it is knife fissures and skin abrasion just from wearing underwear! Ladies when you hit 50 do your research on ALL menopause symptoms these symptoms go far beyond just the irritating painful itch that occur at 60. Vaginal narrowing, UTI’s, yeast infections from out of nowhere. I haven’t had a UTI or yeast infection in 20 years because I take very good care of myself, but that has no bearing on the misery that befalls you. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE I went to 4 GYN’s in my Doc’s office got no help and at 60 am dealing w/this! Dr.Dray is a godsend for addressing women’s physical issues!!

    1. This sounds like what my best friend was describing. Have you found anything to help? I’m scared to get this… She’s miserable.

    2. Augh I can only imagine… just when I forget we have to go through menopause too 😭 I am breastfeeding a baby and have never experienced such itching! I kept going to the doc saying I had thrush and she kept reassuring me I was fine. 🙄

    3. I’m perimenopausal and experiencing the YI after my periods due to sanitary napkins suddenly irritating me, even if fragrance free, or if I wear the incorrect underwear. it’s awful. I also have a bottom itch, i think from skin changes in the area. :( not fun. looking for period underwear

  5. I get really itchy down there when it’s the time of the month. I tried using only tampons but it still itchy but not as much… pads are worse it even gives me rashes even the unscented ones, at one point I even thought I was allergic to pads, tampons even my period 🤔🤷‍♀️

    1. It’s the change in the hormones at the time of the month. I regularly have this same problem too. Probiotics help a bit as do cotton underwear. No cute underwear that time of month or coupled days leading up to it.

    2. I decided to try period panties last year and I tell you, they’ve been a godsend. I have a heavy flow so I always used tampons and pads, and the pads always felt like a diaper. I still use tampons, with the period panties, but I feel so much more comfortable, and don’t get the skin irritation like I did with pads.

    3. Menstrual cup. I realize it’s a modern concept but my life was completely changed when I stopped using disposables. I’m not even am environment fanatic. They are just that good.

  6. Spermicide and other detergents always caused major problems for me. Yes, spermacide is detergent.

    1. That makes sense. I know also that I was sensitive to oil based lubricants…so I switched to water-based and had a better experience over all. :)

  7. Thanks for the reminder to not be embarrassed about talking to your doctor. It’s really easy to feel shy about it, but just hearing your reminder is giving me the confidence to make sure I really talk to my doctor at my next appointment. It’s hard, but the feeling of having checked in with my doctor about something is such a relief, it’s worth it the stress of broaching the uncomfortable subjects.

Your videos make me a better, more proactive and receptive patient, I think. Thank you!

  8. Happy Monday Dr. Dray. Fantastic way to bring the new year in by broaching a sensitive subject that is still hard for women to discuss. Thanks as always for keep us well informed. Have a great day.

  9. Soon after menopause the itching and dryness was unbearable I made an appointment with a gynecologist and she prescribed estrogen cream to be inserted twice a week I got almost immediate results and a bonus a great sex life resumed

  10. Menopause was my “itch” trigger many years ago, and I was miserable enough to go to my gynecologist for one last visit to address this. Thank you for all your advice!

  11. Thanks for covering this issue–people might not initially think of it as a dermatological issue, but it is. I myself have been dealing with it in the past year, including going through unnecessary yeast infection treatment. One potential cause that you didn’t cover here is that your own vaginal discharge may be irritating externally due to its low pH–after finally going to see my gyno about it, she identified it as the potential culprit in my case. Cleansing the area with sensitive baby wipes (NOT “feminine hygiene” wipes) seems to have helped.

  12. Hello Dr Dray, thank you so so much for covering this topic!! Even though I am quite comfortable with my body and bodies in general this is still a topic I struggle to bring up with my doctor.
I have a problem where the skin on my vulva always feels dry and my gynaecologist assured my that I don’t have a yeast or bacterial infection.

I have been using vaseline on my vulva and it has helped a lot with the dryness and I am soooooo glad that you say it is okay to use!
Thank you for your advice and your videos!! ❤

  13. Thank you Dr. Dray, I started having this issue a week ago for the first time. I can’t believe this video came up now. I believe my issue could be menopause related or possibly new shower products. I’m glad you mentioned to use just plain Vaseline. I was trying steroid creams and clotrimazole and cetaphil ointment. Thank you thank you 🙏

  14. Happy New Year Dr. Dray!! Thank you so much for your videos like this one. I have been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and I never thought it would also show up in the vaginal area as well. I’ve been told that your vagina is a self-cleaning unit so I don’t use products down there other than soap and water. I’ll exclude the soap and see if that helps. Also I am 52 I am still dealing with perimenopause. So I can also see a link between the itch and lowering levels of estrogen. I feel better about it. Since watching many of your videos I have been able to be in better control of my flare ups. I feel more confident of caring about myself as well. I have learned so many things that they didn’t teach us back in school, and things our parents either never knew or ever wanted to discuss. I look forward to more of your videos in this new year. Love and Light!! :)

  15. This was a GREAT VIDEO. THANK YOU DR. DRAY.
I have been suffering with this problem for many many years. Still am. I have changed everything from sanitary paper to organic undies to wearing no undies at all in home. Now im 63 and still dealing with this issue. I have tried almost everthing of meds. I don’t know what else . 😔

  16. I’m 57 and have been dealing with vaginal itching for years out of desperation I used diaper rash cream and it actually helps a lot !

  17. Yeaaah! Dr Dray, thank you so much for educating women on this issue. I lived with undiagnosed lichen sclerosis for TEN years because I lacked skill and assertiveness in talking about this with doctors. I kept getting diagnosed with yeast but it never helped… and I knew it wasn’t yeast… but I didn’t know what it was and I was unable to assertively tell them it wasn’t being addressed. The real diagnosis only came after I had developed a stage 1 vulvar cancer. Not fun. I know that’s a bit beyond the scope here… but women need to hear these words and have their sexual health normalized… preferably BEFORE terrible outcomes take place. Thank you for this work… it’s important.

  18. As soon as you said “some of them a lot scarier” I started to cry 😞 because unfortunately that is my situation currently. I am getting seen by a doctor, and I have a follow up procedure to see where I’m at after another bad Pap smear. Hopefully all is well this time. Thank you for talking about this Dr Dray ❤
