  1. I take marine collagen peptides specifically for joint health since I deal with painful joints and it really helps. Any beauty & skin benefits are a huge welcome bonus. It’s nice to know that more studies are being done and are showing positive results. 💙

    1. @Denise NJ Don’t buy any collagen from Amazon because you risk getting a product that has been tampered with. Also, all collagen brands are not created equal. Make sure you get quality collagen. I’ve had amazing results with bovine collagen types 1 and 3. I did my research on the best brands and what to look for in quality collagen and what to avoid.

    2. @Kamisa I appreciate that you point that out. That confirms my suspicion. Can you give more about your thoughts?

    3. @Lauren Vogt Hello, Lauren. We use the regular VP, and sometimes I even use the Vanilla flavor. My friend who is a vegetarian use the Marine version and is happy with it.

  2. I really appreciate what you said about skin fragility . My dear late mum who died as a centenarian had such problems with fragile broken skin and pressure sores . It would have been great to help with that if it had been as simple as her taking a collagen drink. I have been taking collagen for my joints and since doing so my painful knee has completely cleared up. Oddly -I was only mentioning this the other day- also I no longer have such wrinkly and dry elbows and knees and I barely need to moisturise my arms and legs . I use tretinoin on my face so I couldn’t comment on any facial effects.

    1. My mom cared for older relatives. Skin fragility was a big deal. It was really eye-opening to me to see the changes in my elderly relatives’ skin. Nobody ever talks about it. 😢

    2. i can attest to your experience. i’m heading towards mid 40s been struggling with this right knee pain and carpal tunnel for a few years without relief and frankly, took the collagen as an experiment after reading about how it helps atheletes since my knee injury also stemmed from a sports injury. first week in after taking it i was really amazed by how my knee pain disappeared. as part of my own experiment, after finishing my first two bottles of supplement i tried to see what happen if i wean off it, unfortunately within two weeks my knee and wrist pain came back and as soon as i went back on the supplement the pain disappeared again. I do noticed my persistent psoriasis-like patch of dry skin on my left knee cap has since faded by quite a bit. other than that, i don’t really know if there’s a marked difference regarding skin/beauty benefits. i too also use a retinoid on my face (in my case it is adapalene) so i couldn’t comment on facial effects either. my main reason for taking collagen (marine collagen) is just for joint relief

    3. A few years ago, I tried some collagen capsules that I bought at Costco, and became very depressed. The problem went away when I stopped the collagen. I think it was BioCell Collagen, which is marked as bovine source — yet I have no problem eating beef. I’ve taken UC-II collagen without problem, which is made from chicken. Is this different from the type of collagen discussed in these recent studies?

  3. Another derm who’s updated her review on collagen supplements is The Budget Dermatologist. She did two videos last summer, one on how her opinion had changed and the other on supplements she recommended.

    1. I watched hers too! I have used Sparkle for a few months because of her (the HA + Vitamin C peaked my interest). I honestly haven’t seen positive effects. I used the VP one for approximately 2 years (w/o HA + Vit C) and I think I need to go back to it.

    2. @it’s alright But is there a lot of “budget” collagen supplements out there? She recommended the Professional version of the Vital Proteins which is about twice the price of their regular one but she does say why she recommended that one.

    3. @it’s alright Sparkle has verisol which has helped my cellulite . My back of the legs look so much better. I have been taking the unflavored one since her video came out such improvements in my chicken skin, I have taken vital proteins but after a week of it i get severe headaches. I buy the Sparle skin boost plus

    4. Thanks for all your information I have been taking sparkle for about 6 months reason it has verisol plus other ingredients I do see improvement in my skin nails not so much I will continue and thanks again

  4. Thanks for this. I just started taking a collagen supplement at the 1st of the year & haven’t noticed significant changes with my facial skin. (I already have strong nails & healthy thick hair.) It is good to hear that there’s scientific research to indicate it is actually beneficial. I’ll keep at it!

  5. Due to a terrible immune system and genetics, I’ve been taking collagen every day for a couple of years now. When I’ve stopped for whatever reason, I can tell really quickly because my hair gets super greasy, I bruise easily and my joints hurt. Even if I was told it’s all in my mind, I’d still take the stuff because it makes me feel better. 🤷‍♀️

    1. @Kathleen P I use the Neocell Super Collagen Peptides (Collagen Type 1&3) unflavored powder. The suggested serving is 2 scoops a day. Since I have 2 cups of coffee a day, I put one scoop in each cup. Give it about 2-4 weeks to start working on pain.

    2. @rimabrodie Neocell collagen only has Type I & III. Per scoop is only about 6g of collagen as well. Try taking multi collagen like Ancient Nutrition.

    3. Yeh I’m going to see my dietician again too and ask about this as take stuff for my IBS but my immune system been affected post lovely Covid

    4. @LuvanMusiq I have hEDS and it doesn’t improve bruising for me. But the super delicate skin on my hands that was constantly being damaged has greatly improved and I feel like I recover from minor injuries more effectively

  6. I’ve been using collagen supplements for about 4 years. As a runner & free weights enthusiast , I can say it works! I’m 54 & people think I’m much younger.

    1. @Kristy Walker When you have something: ex ….weak nails…and it is corrected. Ex achy joints and …no ashiness….etc….that is how you know :)

  7. I was reluctant to take collagen until recently. Because of the most recent studies have shown some positive results, I have started to take 5 gr/day. I am 72. I hope it will go some way to preserving not only my skin, but also keep my joints working. Thank you once again Dr Dray. I look forward to your videos and the comments of others. 💙

    1. not that you asked, but i would suggest looking into increasing your daily serving size or perhaps switching to a collagen product with a larger serving size. in other words, because of the fact that people lose an increasingly higher amount of collagen as they age, you’ll probably benefit more from taking 10gr of collagen a day vs just 5gr. It makes sense on a superficial level since the more collagen you lose the more you would wanna take to replace that lost collagen, and recent research seems to confirm this.

    2. @NateYES – And I’d possibly even split that dose in to morning and evening, to be sure your body got the chance to better absorb it all.

    3. Yea this is my hope, that it will help me with old age pain and general wellness. For me, the better skin would be just a bonus.😊

  8. I’ve been using bovine collagen for about 4 years. I use this supplement hoping to slow down bone breaks. I’m also taking it for stronger hair and nails. Thanks so much for the science based information! ❤😍

  9. I have been taking vital proteins or boost collagen for almost two years (except for a 3 month break, see below. ) I was skeptical but also interested because I am now over 70 and was noticing first of all more brittle nails than I was used to, hair thinning at my temples and part—enough so that I started changing my hair style (my family has plentiful thick hair as the hair stylist at my niece’s wedding noticed–even my mother in her 90s has a lot of hair, so while this was a change I noticed, to it was not a cosmetic crisis). And my skin was, of course, also showing changes. Over the past two years of working from home, I had used the time saved not commuting, to focus on health by improving my diet and my exercise. I lost a considerable amount of weight and still have a little more to lose to be at a healthy weight. I am interested in anything i can do to encourage skin elasticity after weight loss. All that said, I find that collagen supplements in my morning drink left me feeling more full, which was a plus and provided my body with useful building blocks. The first thing I noticed after close to a year was that my nails stopped breaking. I am fairly convinced that resulted from collagen. Skeptic that I am, I took a break from collagen for a few months and, in fact, nails got worse, and then improved several months after restarting collagen. I think that is a causal event. I also think (in addition to tretinoin and spf) it has helped with skin elasticity. This took much longer to see than the nail improvement. It may be beginning to help me with my hair too, but it will take longer for me to be convinced on that. I have slowly become a believer, but think it is important to use good brands. Costco has the best price on Vital Proteins collagen than I have found elsewhere, although at be least to sample it, iherb.com has smaller sizes of Vital Proteins if you want to sample it for a month before coming to a Costco sized tub.
    Thank you for the update!

  10. Look at you all lovely in green! Such a complimentary color on you Dr Dray!

And PERFECT timing on this topic! I’ve only recently started taking the Vital Proteins collagen supplement, unsure if it’s beneficial or not. So thank you! Always count on you for super informative videos! 💚

  11. Would you consider doing an updated video on Elf skincare options? A dedicated video to the whole brand would be so helpful thanks! ❤

  12. I have seen a huge improvement in hair loss. I am 52 and have been taking collagen for about 6 months now. It’s bovine, 5000 mg. I am switching to marine, however, because I no longer consume beef or pork. Love your videos!

  13. I am so grateful for you Dr. Dray. I started taking vital proteins a couple of months ago just as a preventative measure and as a source of proteins. I am 65 and love to exercise and run everyday. I am hoping this will help preserve my joints and ability to stay active and mobile. I always value your expertise and appreciate your advice. I am a vegan and have been for years, but unfortunately this supplement is not vegan. You have to be flexible to remain flexible I guess. God bless.

    1. Yes, this has been a difficult decision for me too. I only wish there were a vegan source, but I haven’t found one.

    2. I just think the issue is that there can’t be a vegan source because the amino acids needed can’t be found except in animal tissue ( I may be wrong). If that’s true, then you really shouldn’t beat yourself up about it and you’re completely right to take a supplement that isn’t vegan.

  14. I’ve been taking it a few weeks and I’ve noticed I’m not as stiff in the morning or late evening (45/f/average activity level). I’ve been told in the past to up my protein intake so I figure this probably helps with that as well in conjunction with incorporating more protein in food.

    1. Same here! I had pain in my legs and knees in the morning and evening but after taking multi protein collagen powder for less than a month, the aches in my legs is practically gone!!!!!!!!

  15. 2 years ago I was going through some heavy shitt mentally. Then I found your channel and managed to focus more on self care and improving my skincare rather than all my other issues. Your skincare tips actually was one of my main ways into self care and again self love. Just wanted to say thank you for your existence and your amazing content!

    1. You really did the right thing by focusing on yourself and practicing self love! …I too wanted to move away from the negativity of life and become “ self-centered “ and focuse on skin, body and beauty….when you focus on your beauty , it will draw more beauty into your life 🙂

    2. @Nubby Rose Thank you too for your existence, and Anja N too. The world is better with nice people in it. 🙂

  16. Hi Dray, thanks for another great video! In the past, you did a video about quality control which was highly informative. I was wondering if you could do one about the methods used to test things like the absorption into the skin and possibly the bloodstream of skincare products. I thought about this when you mentioned the echogenicity of the skin. I think this might help use know what to look for when bogus claims are made.

  17. Absolutely love using Collagen as a supplement! It really does help with all aspects of health as well as ageing gracefully! Loving your content Dr Dray! Thank you for educating us! 🙏🏻💞✨

  18. This is just my self reflection. I have been taking collagen for 8 months, been on retinol and red light therapy for a year. I felt so much better personally. And my overall health has been improved. BTW, I’m 45. I’d suggest people take it better sooner than later
