Are you showering too much? Dermatologist’s surprising advice

If your health allows showering daily has numerous benefits, including maintaining proper hygiene by removing dirt and bacteria, promoting healthy skin.

Thanks to gentle skin cleansers available in the market today, you can now shower daily without worrying about stripping away your skin's natural oils or damaging your skin barrier.

These new-age cleansers are mindfully designed to retain the essential moisture, keeping your skin hydrated and fresh. They are safe, effective, and free from harsh drying ingredients. So, you're not just cleaning your skin but nourishing it at the same time.

For individuals with skin conditions like eczema, maintaining a balanced skin microbiome is critical. 🦠
Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that often resides on the skin, can become a problem when it overgrows, leading to eczema flare-ups. Daily showering can help manage this bacterial overgrowth and restore the skin's healthy microbiome balance. 🚿

But remember, not all soaps and cleansers are created equal. Those with eczema should use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers that cleanse the skin without causing dryness or irritation

Follow up your shower with a moisturizer designed for sensitive skin to lock in moisture and protect your skin barrier. This routine not only helps to control S. aureus but also provides the hydration your skin needs. 💦

  1. That is crazy she said 2 to 3 times per week. Ewwww😂😂😂 Thank you AL, I don’t care what they say.

  2. Please share the specific cleansers.
I may be sensitive skin wise bc ik i have high inflammation and welt easily plus i cant even wash my hands or hair once without the like dry stickiness under running water that i get from soaps of almost any kind

    1. Long and short.
Pleas emake it more accessible. You have the knowledge and presence to make it more readily accessible to learn

    2. There are many great options. Here are a few: Dove daily eczema line sensitive, La Roche Posay Lipikar Wash AP+, Vanicream Sensitive Wash, Glad Skin Body Wash Eczema-Prone Skin

  3. Also have to think about people with limited mobility or impacted health. Sometimes you physically cannot take care of all your needs every single day. Especially if you don’t have proper care or help.

    1. Yes but the question was how often SHOULD you shower. Not could. For someone who has limited mobility showering every single day would be a challenge absolutely.

    2. @Paige KyeraUsually in a hospital setting, patients are bathed appropriately 3-4 times a week. Me, I come in close contact with patients and staff so I shower before and after work. I also learned to use products that do not dry my skin and leave it itchy and flaky.

  4. I want to smell the person that came up with 2-3 times a week. Bet they smell like a bag of old onions

  5. Sometimes I shower 2x a day but when I was dealing with depression, I couldn’t get out of bed to do so some days. Do what’s best for you, if you can.

    1. I am the opposite. When I was dealing with depression, I used to shower 3 times a day and each shower was like 1.5 hrs.

  6. Could you make a video about hair washing frequency for natural hair? I’ve seen some say that once a month (or even once every two months) is okay, especially if it’s to keep a protective style neat. But then there are others who say washing needs to be done at minimum once every two weeks, no matter the style.

Since the scalp is skin and the hair picks up things from the environment, is it just as bad to wash hair only once a month as it is to only shower twice a week? Or is the scalp so different from the other skin on our body that once a month wouldn’t be bad at all?

  7. Thank you for posting this, because we need to normalize showering every day. All of these nasty people running around all day and getting their filthy sticky bodies into bed everything night, like WHY? I don’t understand people who shower a few times a week. It’s so disgusting to me, and if you think showering every day dries out your skin, that’s what lotion is for.

  8. At least twice a day. I I work outside that day, then, 3 times. I refuse to be sweaty all day

Edit: I was reading the options as daily. These ppl are nasty.

  9. I tried washing my face daily with cleanser but may face looked clear washing it with cleanser 2x a month then daily cleansing. And i always had beautiful skin.

  10. I’m someone with eczema…I can’t say showering daily helps, but sometimes it’s the only way to rehydrate my skin. I’m THAT dry. A huge prob is the amazing feeling of hot water and it’s nearly impossible for me to take a short shower (again because it feels nice). The struggle is absolutely real

  11. This is why they had to tell people to wash their hands frequently during Covid..🤦🏽‍♀️ I’m with AL💪🏾
