Does moisturizer really need to be applied to damp skin? Dermatologist Dr. Dray explains why the timing of moisturizer application can matter for maintaining the skin barrier and reducing water loss after bathing, showering, or cleansing.
Moisturizer can still work when applied to dry skin, but applying it while the skin is still slightly damp can help trap water in the skin and minimize the increased water loss that can occur after washing.
In this short, Dr. Dray explains the science behind moisturizing damp skin and why applying moisturizer soon after bathing or cleansing can be a helpful habit for supporting the skin barrier, especially if the skin tends to be dry.

Oh my God, Doc you look amazing, so pretty.
I live in the desert. I can’t tell you how rough my skin used to be. And you know all that dust in the house? (Is it true that it’s skin flakes?)
I’ve been moisturizing like this for a couple of years now. I even mist myself during the day and apply more moisturizer. I no longer have alligator skin. It’s really helped with the hot dry climate.
Your eye makeup look is so nice!! 🎉❤
Yes I’d like to replicate her makeup 💄 😍 💕 it’s so pretty 😍 💖
You look awesome!
I always instinctively knew to moisturize after showering, because showering strips a lot of natural oils from the body leading to dryness and irritation.
same!
My skin burns when I do that because I use Tretinoin I have to let it dry a little and apply a thick non watery moisturizer. I love Eucerin eczema relief
Too much tret
@JaniceChartersIve been using the recommended amount for over 5 years and theres no irritation except when I don’t do the moisturizing routine that my works for my skin and am loving how clear my skin is, so no it isn’t too much I just have to pat my skin dry before applying it
I only moisturize my face daily with layering. I don’t need to moisturize my whole body everyday.
Her sarcastic tone in beginning is literally my older sister during our fights when we were kids.
Honestly, idk who she is anymore. She has different personalities & tones in different videos. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who noticed that..
@kr13777 And?
I can’t stand it but I don’t want to leave because I trust her information.
@lea@leahgolden7242 she’s no longer the professional doc we once knew but the information is still valid. I’m still unsubscribing unfortunately
Exactly. It’s obnoxious and grating on me actually.
When I first started watching your channel from the beginning I remember you saying to always apply moisturizer to wet/damp skin. Total game changer I’ve told so many people about it and I have atopic dermatitis def a game changer for atopics. If your nervous don’t be it’s insane the difference yall
your hair looks gorgeous!
You look gorgeous ☺️
You look like your glowing Dr. Dray 💎 glowing! Very beautiful you are 🎉
Your skin looks amazing !
You look gorgeous Dr!
I really like illiyoon but I definitely only use it at night because it’s very viscous. I do the sandwich method with my tret
It feels annoying when moisturizing damp skin
How do you moisturize on damp skin and apply Tretinoin to dry skin??
If you’re not ready to moisturise straight out if the shower, you can spray with toner or splash your face with water just before the moisturizer!
Or if you miss the time frame when your skin dries, you can just use a thermal spring water spray, then carry on with the rest of your skincare, easy peasy!
This makes a lot of sense.
I don’t know what you’re doing differently, but this is the best you’ve ever looked! Thanks for all the informative videos over the years!
I agree!! I would LOVE updated day and night routines from Dr. Dray!!
